Best 22 Rifle

I have several my top three just for having fun with that are really accurate are in this order. 1)Browning 22 auto bottom eject,2)Browning lever short throw, and 3) the good old Ruger 10/22. I know the Brownings are made in Japan but they do work good. I had the original ones also and these shoot just as good. Wish I stll had them they are worth some big bucks. There are alot of great 22's out there. Just comes down to what you want it for, and what you yourself likes. I shot some really cheap one's that were really accurate so I can't nock any of them. I like the way the Browning 22 auto points and balance's. Being a bottom eject it can give you problems lying down when your shooting. They come apart really nice for cleaning also.

As stated by previous posters, (and many previous threads) 'best' depends on definition. Best Value? Best resale? Best benchrest shooter? Best carry/hunting? Too many variables without narrowing it down.

I like to look at what makes them 'special', and a standout from the rest.
Benchrest accuracy, resale, - Anschutz, Cooper, (and now CZ)
Not sitting at the bench? It's hard to deny the resale, accuracy, hunting ablility, fun, and production-run length of the Marlin 39 (especially the 39M).

Don't get me wrong, I like the 10/22 and Marlin 60, but I just don't find anything 'special' with them at all, even when someone throws money at them in customization.

I agree with contributors who say there is no best .22 rifle. The answer is personal, and variable. My personal favorite is the Remington Model 510, bolt action single shot. Simple, well made, very accurate, well balanced. A classic design.

I'm glad this thread came up personally.

I'm in the market for a .22lr myself and am looking at the Marlin XT 22. Someone was saying that they were having a problem removing the bolt with a scope that they hadn't mounted high enough, which concerns me.

Either way, I'm leaning towards a Marlin for the price range and (from what I've read) better out-of-the-box accuracy than a 10/22.

I'm more a handguns guy and am fairly new to rifles, though not entirely unfamiliar with them.

That happens on lots of rifles. When mounting a scope, you have to make sure to use a mounting system that allows proper clearance for all items.

Case in point is a scope that sits on my Rem XP100R. As it came, it worked just fine with Leupold low standard rings. However, when I put Butler Creek flip-up covers on it, I could no longer open the bolt. I had to take off the low rings and go to medium. That 1/16" difference was all it took.

10/22?

You have a different definition of accurate than I do. I like the 10/22 and yes I own one but the only thing it is best at is having lost of options for customizing it.

Awesome info - I'm pretty much a rifle newbie.

Thanks Doyle!

I totally agree that choosing the "best" .22 would take a large voting consensus after a load of discussion. It would also need parameters.
I have always liked .22 rifles. Probably have 15 or more here right now. Oldest is about 1875 vintage. I shoot them all. From single shots to Anchutz's very best sporter. My all time favorite to shoot, carry, looks, etc. is a Marlin Century Limited. Bought it used in 1988. It is just a Marlin model 39M dressed up a little. It is short, light, reliable and plenty accurate for most jobs assigned to a .22 rifle and it has lots of class.....John

well my 10/22 from 1999 is good for learning about malfunctions. they happen a lot. even with factory mags. even after a good cleaning. even after changing parts like the extractor.(fte is just one of its favorite malfunctions, it does it all)

took a chance on a sig 522. excellent semi .22lr. love it. but now the blackdog mags don't feed 100% all the time.

love my henry .22lr lever. 100% reliable with walmart federal bulk.

Actually the best 22 is a 22 mag by Marlin.
