Best 12g Pump Shotgun Under $500???

Look for used Expresses having a machined extractor. These are older and made before cost cutting internal changes. When you get one, disassemble and clean--especially the chamber. This cleaning tip applies to any pump or semi auto.

I too like Mossbergs. Academy in Tx is selling the Maverick for about $138--special price. But just jump up and buy the Mossberg 500 and be done with it.

Browning BPS Hunter model - should be around $ 500 / especially with all the holiday specials going on ....

Its my pump gun of choice ...28" barrel --- in 12ga or 20ga ....good solid guns and nice smooth actions. Cast is neutral - and they come with a ventilated rib ...

All of the guns mentioned are decent guns ...its a question on which one "Fits" you the best - not who made it !! Of all the pump guns mentioned - the BPS Fits me the best ( but a pump gun is still a big disadvantage for skeet shooting - doubles )... / and while most of us have moved to other guns for more serious clay target game performance / a good pump gun, is still a good long term gun to keep.

Zippy, after a decade of modding shotgun fora, I thought I heard all the questions. This camo finish vs heat was new one.

Remington 870 Express Super Mag

That will do everything you need it to do. Skeet, trap, doves, rabbits, pheasants, deer (add rifled slug barrel), ducks and geese. I have shot all these with mine (870 express mag). You can't go wrong and if you look around you should be able to find a brand new one with a synthetic stock and the slug barrel for under $500

I agree with BigJim regarding the Browning BPS. Also has the bottom ejecting that makes it good for righties/lefties; top tang safety and other nice touches you don't really pay extra for (ventilated rib). I've had mine for 20 years and it still works flawlessly.

I'm a full-time user of an 870 Police Magnum. And carry one at work. It has never failed me and I run about 200 rounds of Federal Low Recoil slug and 9 pellet buckshot through it every week when teaching.

You can often find a gently used one for around $500.00 and you can't go wrong with it.

shotguns

only two out there for me, remy 870 and Moss 500 a1, advantage on moss is that your slugs wont get caught in racking..870 advantage is you are able to drop one out and put another in and it has a metal receiver

Do you mean 590A-1?
advantage on moss is that your slugs wont get caught in racking..
Even as a Mossberg man, I never registered this complaint in file on reasons to prefer the Mossberg...
870 advantage is you are able to drop one out and put another in
Out of the chamber or out of the mag tube?
Having had both in my hands and both tore down fully I know the function of both but moreso on the Mossberg... I feel a round swap from either the chamber or tube is similar in functional requirement on both but I prefer to do both with the Mossberg I am more familiar with...
and it has a metal receiver
"METAL" Poor choice of word... Metallic is closer to accurate but to be totally clear you should say STEEL or FERROUS METAL... Both are "ALLOY" both are "of metal" neither is plastic.

A used Ithaca 37 perhaps, as nobody has mentioned.................................. bottom eject, known to be pretty reliable

Actually, you can buy a brand new 870P for under $500 shipped.

I got a Remington 870 Express a few months back, and have put about 1000 rounds through it so far. I shoot mostly slugs and buckshot, some birdshot, and I am loving it.

One of my buddies has a Benelli Nova, and I have shot maybe 100 rounds through it, mostly birdshot and slugs. I love it also. I have to say, it is a bit smoother than my 870, although that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with mine.

Another of my buddies has a Mossberg ?590?
I have only put about 50 rounds through it, all slugs, and I like it a lot also. I like the 870 and Nova more, but I do like how the safety on it is the same design as on my Savage 111.

So basically, get any of the mainstream el cheepo's, and you'll probably fall in love with it. Keep it oiled, use it a lot, and a pump will just get smoother.
