Beretta Elite or Colt 1991A1??

There's a weird choice eh? I have some cash burning a whole in my pocket and one of these 2 needs a new home.

Price for the Elite(9mm) is $589, the Colt's are $469 for the Parkerized or $519 for the Stainless.

Pluses for me on the Beretta is
1) I'd like to get a Beretta
2)9mm means less expensive to shoot (I don't reload)
3)Would be a range gun

Pluses for the Colt are
1) I'd like to get a Colt
2)These are getting rare to find in my area, these are the first I've seen in many months
3)Would be a range gun

I'm leaning to the Beretta but am worried I'll never see a Colt again :)

Which way should I lean?

Thanks

Get the Colt now, you'll be happy you did. The Beretta isn't going anywhere and before you know it, you'll have more money to burn.

IMNSHO, the beretta is a far superior pistol. i have a 92FS and a 92G Elite. i love them both. i trust my 92FS over any other pistol and i shoot my Elite better than any other 9mm pistol i have ever shot. my Elite has a hard chrome finish and a trigger job done my Ernest Langdon. i would highly recommend this trigger job be done to any 92 series berettas you own. you will be very happy with the beretta, it is a great gun. and it's also a much better range gun than a 1911.

Ditto about the Beretta... it's a far superior handgun in many ways. If you are on Hydejam's train of thought and want to get the "Colt" brand before they are gone... there are much better Colt 1911's out there than the 1991A1 (and better 1911's than Colt IMHO). Good luck!

The 1911A1!

A true classic!

All serious shooters I know who have 1911A1s end up eventually customizing them to some extend, so you get exactly what you want. (That means as little or as much $s as you want to spend.)

Many people dig on 1911s. So why do nearly all big name pitoleros sing their praises?

If you are thinking of getting a Colt 1911, why not spend a little more and getting the next step up? It's called the XS series. These pistols have a few really nice features (like better sights) and aren't that much more expensive. It may be harder to find, but would prob be worth the wait...

I agree with RikWriter,
The prices you mentioned for the Colt are less than what I have been seeing. I believe I would take advantage of it.

Slartibardfast, i'm not positive about everything EL did to it but i know that it made a BIG difference. i know he puts a 92D spring in and he polishes some internal parts to make them run smoother. i think the DA is lightened to about 8lbs or so and the SA is also lightened quite a bit. it's like night and day between it and my stock 92FS. the trigger job costs $75 and EL also does another trigger job for $100 that involves something called a "speed bump trigger" i dont know what that is so i got the standard trigger job. it is definetly worth the $. EL works out of Virginia Arms and is a really nice guy. give him a call and he will answer any questions you have.

Hey Grape-
Where are you looking at those Colts? 4Seasons, AG Guns? Don't worry, I'm not going to run out and snatch 'em from ya! Thanks and good luck! BTW, I'd buy the Colt over the Beretta. In all honesty, the Beretta might be a better gun, but sometimes the better gun is simply the one you want the most. Good luck!

Here's something to think about. I bought a new Colt Mustang Plus2 (.380 ACP) in November. In December I had it returned to the factory for repair because it was defective. That's the last I've seen of it. Checked three weeks ago and they hadn't even looked at it yet.

Get the Beretta.

There is a reason that Colt has been in and out of bankruptcy for a long time and are now circling the drain.

Overpriced Crap.

Politics doesnt matter,Clinton doesnt matter, or any of the rest of it. They have just been making a lousy product for what they cost, hell Norinco was better.

The Beretta is a better product to begin with. And,as posted earlier, when tuned they become outstanding. Not to mention nothing is more reliable, especially in the 9mm versions.

And please, dont even consider a 1991A1 will ever be of investment quality. Junk is junk, and nothing more.

I feel for Ledbetter. He bought a Colt product in good faith and will now probably never see it again. They dont have anybody left in the factory.

I was just offered a chance to buy a 1991A1 matte finish stainless for $600. It is used but only slightly - with about 150 rounds through it. I didn't know that Colts were so universally disliked. I thought it might be worth it (based on what I thought was a good name brand). Maybe I'm better off getting a low end Kimber for about the same $$.

To all colt haters (politics aside): I have a 1991A1 Government Model and am totally satisfied with it. Shot about 500 rounds so far with only one failure to feed. It's as accurate as I am ever going to be and the matt black finish is holding up real well.

Plastic trigger and mainspring housing - so what, it shoots real well, is dependable and it's a Colt!

If your after the better quality pistol between the Beretta and the Colt 1991A1, that's a no-brainer. Beretta. If your after a possible collector, neither. There are about 3.7 gazillion Berettas out there. The 1991A1's are.... I'll just say not near the quality of a 1911 model, and will never be as desirable.
