Like anything else, some love em, some hate em.
The training guns at the USAF base here on avg have over 30K rounds through each of them (NATO spec ammo, same as SAAMI +P), with the original blocks and no problems. Have never broken a block at less than 15K rounds (it's very rare they say), no damage to guns when they did break. Have never had/seen a broken slide. Maybe some take better care of their tools than others do? The range guys say they are more reliable than the M1911A1s and M11 SIGs, even the M15 revolvers.
OTOH, some Army and Navy guys do nuthin but bitch about em. NYPD claims to have a bushell basket full of broken blocks. LAPD and LASO seem not to have the same problems, have been using them about 15 years now.
Bill Wilson, Mr. 1911 himself, thinks the Beretta is _the_ most reliable pistol, has one of his own w over 30K rounds through it.
Ted Nugent put over 100K through his replacing the block just once along the way. I put over 20K each through a 92F and 96FS, no problems at all, just changed recoil springs at 10K rounds.
According to the many rental ranges around, the Beretta and SIG are the most reliable, the Glock and Ruger the most durable of the DA autos.
Find sumthin else to worry about? You are a helluva lot more likely to kB a 40/357/45 Glock than break a Beretta slide/block in my experience, and I don't worry about that (or my Glock 21/27s) either!
