Beretta 92FS-Any Good?

I went to the range yesterday to do some shooting. Shot about 200 rounds through my Sig P220....which I have really come to love and is my new duty sidearm.

I also brought along my Beretta 92FS to do some shooting. After shooting the Sig I decided to really abuse my Beretta. I had 6 hi-cap mags with me.....loaded them up and proceeded to burn through 300 rounds as fast as I possibly could. Stopping only long enough to reload the mags. I did not just try and pull the trigger, I was shooting head shots on a TQ-15 and a 2-dimensional black/white bad guy target. Except for the few that I pulled off....all shots were in the head zones from 25 yards. As a firearms instructor for my dept I was trying out various shooting ideas......firing shots from the low ready...double taps...etc. All fired pretty fast. And I had zero malfunctions. To say the Beretta is in-accurate is hog wash.....its not a target pistol by any means, and it was not intended to be. But I'll stack my Beretta up against any non-target pistol. I bought this pistol when I turned the magical age of 30....now that I'm 40...er, 39 and holding I've been shooting it for 10+ years and have no complaints about it. Rust...never been a problem. I've never seen a locking block/slide failure in my life (military/LEO). Trigger.....stock factory...nothing done to it. Shoots great for me. Is the DA trigger pull long? Yeah, so what.....I got used to it. Every pistol has something you need to get used to. My Sig shoots different too....something I had to adapt to.....as does every other pistol I own.

BTW, I too was issued an M16 when I was in the Corps (late 70's) and I found it to be highly accurate. Never had a problem, except with crappy blanks :)

Steve:

Firing as fast as you can, all your shots went into the head of a target shooting offhand at 25 yds??

If thats what you are saying, thats dang good shooting with anything!

Yes, two-handed, strong hand, standing position from the 25 yard line. There were a few outside of the head but that was my fault no the guns. I was shooting at a PA Game Commission Range off Rt. 118 in Lehman Twp (out past Sweet Valley if anyone is familiar with the location). For the most part thats all you can shoot is 25 yards...or 50 depending on the range because of other shooters on the line. I had one shooter walk down to check his target and looked at mine and said..."uh...yeah, I think that guy is dead" LOL

I'm a LEO and a firearms instructor so I try and get to the range as often as I can. I'm not an excellent shot......but I'll settle for a pretty good one :)

The best shooter I have seen is a guy who worked for our dept part-time. He was shooting a compensated Glock and had simply outstanding groups. He also shoots IDPA (told me he has shot 15k+ rounds this year). After looking at his target, I believe him.

Before this thread closes, I would like to again say that I really like my 92FS. Although I do not have the hundreds of thousands of rounds through mine as some of you Beretta owners do. At just under 300 rounds, it does pretty good!! I have no complaints about the accuracy. I managed to get four standard capacity mags for it, so I can't grouse about that either!! :D

I waited for a long time to get my 92FS and I certainly wasn't unhappy (Thanks Dave!) as it's more than I could have hoped for. I primarily wanted the pistol because it's the standard military sidearm, but I also liked its design and ergonomics. Even though I don't have huge hands it fits me well and I shoot it well enough. I expect I'll carry it as a winter carry gun, I love my Kydex holster for the pistol. It seems as if there's no more natural way to carry a 92.

This is the real reason I love it: It is reliable. While nothing is 100% certain, I am more certain that my Beretta will fire and cycle than any other pistol I've ever shot with the possible exception of the Makarov. That's very important to me. So, for me in a word it's reliability.

As a military armorer, I can honestly tell you the guns are tough, reliable, and withstand a great deal of abuse. The one negative that I have seen over the years is that they rust VERY easily. Even new pistols straight from the bag only take a short while to rust. Mainly the exterior of the barrel and the magazines. This is easily prevented with basic maintenance, but you really have to keep on them.

I have a 92fs INOX, and it is the most accurate pistol I have ever fired. Better than 2 Colt Commanders and a Combat Elite. Much better than any Glock I have ever shot and better than a Hi-Power I had. I don't get 3" groups offhand at 25yds, and I doubt anyone can at a realistic firing rate, but I do get 5" groups pretty regularly with a few flyers here and there. It is more than accurate enough for combat work. I just shot a GoldCup yesterday that had been accurized and I couldn't get as tight a group off a bench as i can off hand with my Beretta. It has never malfunctioned, although I only have about 1000 rnds thru it. I replaced the trigger spring with a 16lb Wolfe and it is about as good as I could want from a DA/SA pistol.

I take exception to JRiggs statement that they rust easily. NEGATIVE. The barrel and magazine "may" rust. The barrel and magazine are blued and the rest of the pistol is Bruniton or anodized. The barrel and magazines should be wiped after handling, however, the rest of the pistol is very corrosion resistant.

I have found the 92 to be a smooth shooter but accuracy wasn't that great for me. Trigger pull is rather smooth. The gun definately feels good in the hand. My advice would be to rent one and see if it is right for you. ;)
