I'm also of the opinion that old threads aren't necessarily the scourge of the Earth.
If someone wishes to write some fancy vBulletin code to save the world, write some code that won't allow someone to post when they haven't read the entire thread. That's far, far more annoying. They guy who suggests something that was solved 10 posts and 4 days before their genius answer.
Another fun aspect of old threads getting bumped is seeing some familiar TFL'ers that we miss, or didn't realize that we missed.
