Ok gents, I need some advice.

I'm thinking of buying a Beretta 96 and I'm wondering if my preban 92 mags will fit in it and if so if they will feed 40SW reliably.

Any ideas, suggestions and jokes at my expense are welcome. :D

They will fit and work 100 at least the ones I have do. I have used mags for my 92F from 1992ish in my 96Cent....

I haven't tried this, but a maximum of ten .40s should fit in the 92 mag.

It'd be interesting to compare the 15-round 92 and 10-round 96 mags side by side. I believe that their overall dimensions are the same, at least. If I remember correctly, the 10-rounder was the original design for the Model 96 mag. When Beretta later developed the 11-round 96 mag (now banned, of course), the magazine tube had to be lengthened slightly (maybe 1/8") and the floorplate had to be changed to accommodate the 11th round.

Accidently loaded .40 rounds in my 92 mag, noticed when it jammed in the chamber *duh*.
Sryan ordered the 92/96 combo kit, it came with two seperate magazines, 1 marked for 9 mil, 1 marked for .40
Might want to ask him if he notices a difference in the size of either magazine.

Thanks for the advice gents. Sryan, any ideas? I'm still trying to find one of my buds that has a 96 so that I can compare the two. I'm cheap so I don't feel like bying 40SW ammo just to try to compare how they fit and if so do I need to change followers? Since everyone I know carries either a 9mm or a .45 this should prove interesting. Oh well the search goes on

wouldn't advise it. i have heard that it works for some people but i wouldn't trust them. first they can mess up your mags and second the feed lip is just slightly smaller and that may not make a difference usually but it might the time you need it to save your life. i would spend some extra money and buy some 96 mags just for defense (if thats what your using it for) at least. i wouldn't trust them.

If you can fit 10 rounds of .40 into a 15 round 92 mag, and the dimentions of the 96 and 92 mags are identical, then couldn't you fit 15 rounds of 9 x 19 into the 10 round 96 mags?

Actually, I agree with Russell92. It's an interesting topic. But I personally wouldn't rely on a magazine to work with cartridges it wasn't designed for.

If you use 92 mags with .40 S&W ammo, the feed lips will get deformed (it may take some time but it will happen). The .40 S&W rim is .424", whereas the 9mm rim is .394". Why would you risk damage to your 15 round 9mm mags, if you can only get ten .40 S&W rounds (the same number as the 96 mags)?

92FS mags in 96A1

Mine interchange with no problems.
I checked with Beretta and they said "For range use, you should be fine" but they stressed "They are very very similar. The 96A1 magazines have wider feed lips, so they are not reliable for home defense"

If you have pre-ban 92 mags, I assume you live in a state that requires them. Considering even if they do work as others stated, and they only hold 10 rounds of .40, why risk damaging your pre-ban mags feed lips which can be costly to replace when you can easily buy 10rd .40 mags.

We might have a new record here - over 14 1/2 years between posts!

I didn't notice either. I'll say it again, after 2 or 3 years threads should be set to automatically lock themselves or close. If it's set up so after a week or two you can't edit old posts, I don't see why it cant be set up to lock threads after a certain time period.

It's not that we don't disagree with your logic, it's sound. However, in their infinite wisdom, vBulletin hasn't included an automatic locking function such as you described. Personally, I wish they did. But in order to do what you described, it would take a hack of the software or some database manipulations outside of the standard tools available.

These old threads are "new" to people just joining.

Why change the system when it doesn't hurt to leave it as is?

The information in them is just as valid as the day it was first written
