Beretta 92 inox vs Glock 17

Okay, heres the deal everyone. After my beloved Ruger s/a revolver got stolen out of my truck, a friend has offered to give me on of his "extras", either a Glock 17 or a Beretta 92 Stainless. Knowing myself and my wife, this will be the only pistol i will buy for the next decade or so. My question is which should i take? I have shot both types before, and love both of them. My main concern here is reliability over the long haul. Accuracy is important too, but i would rather have a pistol that does an 8" group and fires every time i pull the trigger, than a pistol that capable of a 2" group that i have to coax into working. As stated before, this will be the pistol for both myself and my wife (an inexperienced shooter). I am having a very difficult time with this decision, so i would appreciate everyone sounding off on this topic.

The Glock has a better likelihood of lasting forever, and it's simpler to use. You can treat it poorly and it won't look any different, plastic is plastic and the steel is more rust resistant than stainless. This gun design doesn't seem to wear much from shooting or otherwise.

The Beretta may be just a hair more reliable (open to debate) and has more external safety features, which doesn't make it safer, but offers more options and complexity. Not a gun for smaller hands.

I'd go with the Glock, but both are accurate and reliable weapons popularly issued to military and police. The debate need be no more involved than that. I would suggest you and your wife shoot them and then decide.

You're picking from two very reliable pistols, either will probably last you a long time. Personally, I'd pick the Glock 17, and I did. I'd also love to have a 92FS, it's just not made it to the top of my buying list. :)

Good buddy! I have a few questions first:

1st - Is the Beretta Italian or American made?
2nd - Does either come w/ hi-cap mags?
3rd - What generation Glock? (w/ or w/o finger grooves?)
4th - How much use have they already seen?
5th - Any accessories come with either gun?

Depending on your answers, I'd lean towards the Beretta

Eek!

You may have named the two most reliable full-size 9mm's on the planet.

Which one feels more comfortable in your hand?
Which one were you able to hit better with?
Are you going to shoot it often?

ooops

Where are my manners? I forgot to welcome you to TFL! Once you start reading the different threads and checking out the other rooms, you'll understand why this is a great place to hang out ;)

Kermit,

In answer to your questions, i havent checked to see if the beretta is italian or american, stupid me, i thought they were all italian.
I think the Glock is without the finger grooves.
And they both are brand new, in the box, no rounds shot at all. These are extras a friend bought, and will probably never use.
Both of them are going to have 2 hi-cap mags, 15 on the 92fs, and 17 on the Glock.

I have a thing for most Italian made anything, so I'd jump all over a NIB Italian 92fs Inox  But, not knowing that for sure, there is something to be said for a G17 and its 17+1. Plus, since you're used to a revolver, not having an external safety on that Glock shouldn't be an issue for ya...

Thanks for the advice guys, always appreciated.

And thanks for the welcome Kermit.

My inclination at this point is to go for the glock, thinking that it will be able to deal with all the abuse i can dish out to it.

I maybe a newbie when it comes to 1911's but I must say Go with Glock!!!. Crazy stuff has happend to them and they still keep firing. One of em was where one was accidently dropped out of a chopper over a under construction mall parking lot at 500ft. They found it with the slide broken from the frame. Reattached it and the thing fired as if it was brand new. I read a story about a beretta falling from about 100ft during some tactical climbing and the steel actully shattered.

I would get the Glock. I have a 19 and I had a 92FS-B. The Beretta was a good gun, but I like the Glock better,

Like Tamara posted, get the one that you both agree fits both of you with the least compromise.

I like the Glock better than the Beretta, but they are both excellent guns. Get whichever you shoot better and feels better to you.

Anyone who shoots a gun that has been dropped from 500', had the slide break off and jury rigs it back on deserves all the injuries he sustains from having the slide fly back into his face. May I please enter a call of BS here?

They are two of the most reliable handguns in the world. Take the one that best fits you, though. Each has its positives and negatives, but both are great.

The Beretta has a huge ejection port and it's open almost 180 degrees for the most reliable ejection possible. I'm serious when I say it's huge; you could probably have it rechambered in .357 Magnum and it will eject! (I can fit .50 AE cases in mine.)

The GLOCK has the best corrosion resistence of any handgun I've ever seen. The Tenifer treatment done to the metal is extremely durable as well.

These are just a few points to consider. Do a search on both guns here.

They are both great and reliable. If you are equally comfortable with both, I would base my decision on how much you want to pay for magazines. Beretta mags are less expensive.

I have 2 Berettas that I really like. Had a glock 21, got rid of it,nothing against the gun, just like the berettas better. Also IMHO, the berettas evoke a pride of ownership that just wasn't there for me with the glock. So far ,both my Berettas have been flawless.

Reliability over the long haul? Sounds like you just described a Glock!! I think you've already made up your mind!

beretta:>

Glocks are nice, but I have a Beretta 92FS and wouldn't trade it for anything. I've fired Glocks, H&Ks, and 1911's, and I'll never give up my Beretta.

I'll be careful the next time I'm doing "tactical climbing" or flying around in my chopper NOT to drop my handguns. . .

Alrighty then!
