Bench shooters, the norm?

At my own range i often fire from sitting and prone positions. The sitting position is my favorite when spot and stalk hog hunting.

I purchased the MagPull tactical bench which attaches to the tactical picatinny rail on my tactical AR.

Now no matter where I go tactically, I have a tactical bench to shoot tactically from.

At the range I use most frequently, 99% of the shooters use the bench. Its a class A well-groomed and well-supervised range, frequented by people of the entire age and experience spectrum. Gun enthusiasts are some of the best people that one could hope to meet and associate with. I pack up two rifles and 300-400 rds of ammo just about every Saturday and spend about 2 1/2-3hrs just shooting from the bench for R&R. :D

Bench shooting

Shooting from a bench with a rest or a bag is how I test hand loads for accuracy and velocity. Shooting thru a chorny off hand ain't gonna happen. :D

When growing up in western Colorado, my summers were spent shooting an old BB gun at everything that moved. Eventually the skill of shooting off hand just came naturally. 50 years later, my off hand shooting leaves a lot to be desired. Prairie dawg shooting from a rest is about the best thing since rolled toilet paper for an old OVERWEIGHT geezer like me.:D

At the range, I use the bench. I want to know where my rounds go under optimum conditions. That being said, the hog I took in March of this year was 127 yards from a sitting position. The one the year before was 150 yards offhand. The longest about 5 or six years ago was offhand at 220 yards. As long as I know here the bullet is going when I do everything right, I know if I put the crosshairs where I want them, the bullet will go there, no matter which position I am using.

In the fall, spring and winter, I pretty much stick to the bench. Gives me plenty of time to work up loads and practice calling the wind. Summertime I work on positions I am likely to encounter while hunting but that doesn't happen at the range. I used to shoot 200 rds/week doing 3 and 4 position smallbore but the joints don't like it anymore. Wow, that makes me sound old.

Some good advice was passed alomg to me a few years back My Father-in -Law. He said that you can't haul that bench arond the woods with you. It was the same as his Dad passed along to him years erlier.

He passed aboy 13 years back, but Iv'e always appeciated the words of wisdon.

But one should seek some method of resting the gun on something solid.

When shooting at the Wildlife Management Area you can only shoot of the bench for rifle or shotgun with slugs. The other side was designed for both shotgun with buck or slug and pistol but they found there is no sporting use for pistols so you can't shoot them but that side is standing.

I have been to another range with a friend who is a member and there you can basically do different shooting positions but you have to stay and the cement otherwise they would kick you out because you are not behind the safety line.

So it kinda sucks that I really don't have a place to go and shoot to have really fun at. I want to do firing while moving at multiple targets but that is what I want but can't have.
