Invite a slow acquaintance, not some one you especially care for ( I would take my stupid brother-in law ) and make sure you could out run them...
He would be the "sacrifical offering to the bear" and allow you to escape.

Take a look at what Alaskans carry for bear defense when they fish in areas where bears reside. There are a LOT more guns than cans of bear spray.

The last time I had to gear up in preperation of a bear encounter, it wasn't while fishing, it was in my driveway when I lived on Hillside. Had chased a black bear away from the garbage bags that were in the back of my roommates truck, and needed to move that garbage to the back of my truck so I could get rid of it. Loaded the 12 gauge with slugs and buckshot, 3" mag shells.

I can't give any advice, other than I would listen to people that live in bear country.
