since this about bear defense what do you feel is a starting adaquate caliber for black bears? i figure 44 mag is where you start for griz but where should you start for black bears? handguns only.
Always carry a .22 Revolver and take a friend with you. If you are approached by an aggressive bear, shoot the person with you in the leg then run. If you have qualms about this then carry a jar of honey. At the appropriate time throw the honey on your companion and run.
Yes, I do start at .44 magnum, but have used .357 with high powered 180 gr bullets from Buffalo Bore in the past. Since living in Idaho, I prefer the comfort of the .44 magnum instead, but I do keep my EDC Ruger SP101 pocket carry filled with those 180 gr bullets while in bear country as my BUG at all times.
