BassPro buying Cabela's?

I will skip my tirade on how much I hate the box stores and what they stand for.

Will BP honor Cabellas gift cards if / when they do take them over?

Gunplummer- just ask for the discount at checkout. My VA card has been sufficient, as well as my dl that shows vet status.

I rarely shop "Live" at the store. If it was not for the free points on the Visa card, I doubt I would shop there at all. Can one do it on-line? I have a rating card, but how would you use it on-line?

I work within a mile of the Cabelas in Buda, TX, so I often go in there during my lunch hour. I usually don't buy anything, but see if there's anything new in the gun library and see how the .22 rimfire and powder shortage situation is coming along.
The .22 shortage practically seems to be over, in Cabelas anyway, though the prices are a bit on the gouging side.
Shotgun powders are still hard to get and are overpriced when available. Actually, all the shotshell reloading components are a bit overpriced and the selection is mediocre. However, still way better than the Bass Pro, both prices and selection.

I'm wondering if the Cabelas stores will be operated as Cabelas stores or will they become Bass Pro Shops.

I stopped shopping at Bass Pro when they moved all the handgun ammo to behind the counter. (not sure why...other than perhaps crowd control during panic-buying periods) Bit of a pain, if it's crowded, to wait your turn to get a clerk so you can grab a couple of boxes of whatever. If I want to do that, I might as well just go to my LGS...at least they sorta like me there.

Cabela's still has everything out on the shelves (Gander too, IIRC). I can go there, fondle to my heart's content and then head for the checkout lanes.

My local BP also has all ammo on the shelves . But what I hate is all of the long guns are behind the counter . I can't even see what they have .

I used to buy a LOT of stuff from Cabelas. They had their own brand of just about anything, and while it was more expensive, they had their "World Class Guarantee" and you could return any house brand item anytime under their warranty. No longer, they discontinued it about 5 or 6 years ago. I was told that they could not afford to take returns or they would go broke. So I stopped shopping there, as did many others I knew of. And so now they are going broke. Hmmm, must have been all those returned items. Nothing to do with their multi-million dollar stores sprouting around the country like toadstools and them taking up selling garbage like you find at WalMart.

I shop both.
Cabela's for guns and gun-related stuff.
Bass Pro for fishing stuff.

Bass Pro prices overall are much higher than Cabela's in my area. I fear a merger or an acquisition would just mean higher prices on everything due to less competition.

Buy out by Bass Pro, interesting. I don't like it.

They are building a brand new Cabela's in my area now . It is suppose to open in the spring of 2016 . We already have a Bass Pro here . The two stores will be about 15 miles apart and about 25 miles from me . I just wish they were building the Cabela's closer to me .

They completed a Cabela's near me earlier this year. A Bass Pro is being built almost across the interstate from Cabelas. One is in TN and the other is in GA.

I agree. GA sales tax is less than TN. Chattanooga sales tax rate is 9.25% and Cleveland is 9.5%. I believe it approaches 10% in the Gatlinburg/Sevierville area. GA a little less. The dominant reason is that TN has no state income tax on earned income. My very first visit to a Cabelas retail store was in the new one just north of Atlanta off I-75 about a year ago. A Cabelas visit when I was traveling just never fit in time wise. Bass Pro has stores in Memphis, Nashville, Sevierville, and Bristol. It was always a trip to visit a Bass Pro, but the frequency in state was enough to satisfy my needs. Now they are building a medium sized Bass Pro near Chattanooga which is much closer to me. Chattanooga area will have Dicks, Gander Mountain, Sportsman Warehouse, Cabelas, and Bass Pro when the BP store is completed. This buy out may impact its completion with the Cabelas store so close.

Tennessee also puts a 10¢ tax on every box of ammo as well.

There's a Cabella's an hour away and one a few hours away. The one close by is big, but the one in Wheeling is a monster and is fun to just look at the exhibits. I like Cabella's better than Bass Pro although they do have creeks going through the store so that's cool. But a good Cabella's blows Bass Pro away. But once you're done looking at the enormous mountain, the trophy room or whatever it is, the fish, and the African room you realize all that's left to do is look at the gun library and hope you remember which guns you like so you can buy them somewhere else for a realistic price.

While both are overpriced vendors, the quality of Cabelas' clothing and footwear are far better than BassPro. Generally speaking, I find the Cabelas' sales person better informed than the BassPro person. When it comes to re-loading supplies, Cabelas is the more diverse of the two. I find that their prices approximate those of the LGS in my area.

I hope Cabelas rejects the bid.

+1

I find their prices very similar but I'd much prefer that they stay separate. A merger won't be good for us in the long run.

I currently live in CA (bummer) and don't have either one anywhere close.

I used to like them both quite a bit but over time have learned there are better places to get any of the stuff they offer.

However, I usually find myself wandering around Bass Pro for a little while when on my way out of Vegas. :)

The new Cabelas in my area has a bargain cave. I find the "cave" boring.... stuff that is still over priced and anything good often has missing parts.

Nah.
Don't worry about it. Cabela's jacks the price up on nearly everything in the store. They're almost as bad as Gander Mountain.

I can't speak of Gander Mountain as they do not have a store near me.
However we do have a Cabela's and I have purchased a few things from them, in my opinion they are just an over priced China Mart.
