Baseball glove oil on holster?

a LITTLE neatrsfoot IF...

your have an old "HUNTER Co., tannic-acid tanned leather. (russet color to it)

THe new "CHROME tanned" leather, (yellowish brown color) do not need neatsfoot oil, light wipe with a cloth to remove surface dirt, then spray with a light silicone. Don't drench.

Locate old copy of John Bianchi' s book - "Blue Steel & gunleather", it has a chapter on leather care.

Personally, I clean with saddle soap and use a coat of "neutral" shoe polish wax to preserve and protect. It's worked out very well for me. There are various specialty products now, but "if it ain't broke....."

Ditto...shoe polish (paste style) is parrifin based and protects without softening.

One of the things I've learned here at TFL is that you should only use a product that specifically list guns or gun related items on such items. Use of any product that doesn't specifically list holsters should be avoided as it will make it fall apart in about 1/2 a nanosecond.

Oils including Mink and neatsfoot have been being used to protect holsters for centuries. I think that your idea of a glove oil should be fine.

The biggest mistake,,,

,,,is to use the "Swine Theorum" which states: "If a little is good then a lot must be better."

If you have one of the molded holsters than using a softener will "erase" some of the molding. The wax treatments work well on those holsters.

Whatever you use,,, use only a little of it.

Neatsfoot oil (pure, not the compound) is not the evil stuff most think it is,,,
It's that most people drown their leather in it.

A tiny amount keeps the leather fibers lubricated so the leather does not crack,,,
But this is a once a year thing.

Renaissance wax is great stuff,,,
but like all waxes it can build up over time,,,
Again, this is because most people simply use too much.

Wipe your holster with a slightly damp sponge using water and saddle soap,,,
After it dries you can wax it with a TINY amount of wax,,,
Once or twice a year is plenty.

But again,,,
Use anything sparingly.

I sought advice on what product to help preserve a 1936 Luger holster. I received advice from lugerholsterrepair who is a moderator on the lugerforum.com and in the business of preserving and repairing luger holsters.

He recommended Connolly Hide Care. Amazon.com has it for sale.
