Barreled Action: Howa 1500 vs Winchester M70

Both are good production actions and you would not go wrong with either but I would pick the M70. I'm a fan of three position safeties.

Sure Shot McGee,

I wouldn't call push feed "newer" as the Mosin Nagant started being mass produced in 1891....

FWIW Howas/Vanguards have a three-position safety

Is that right? That's part of the Vanguard II upgrades, I suppose.

Wonder if they also fixed the "once you make the trigger very light the safety no longer works" thing, too? I would bet anything they did fix it.

Well, just pick one. I'd still go Win 70 though. :)

I've owned both the pf models in 7mm rem mag and the weatherby vanguard was at least a pound and a half heavier than my 70, both like heavy bullets, and both very consistant shooters.....I'd go with the lighter rifle....

In response to the questions about the newer Howa/Vanguard trigger: (sorry this image is huge)

No other action has surpassed for accuracy at longer range use than Winchester 70's have done. A few have almost equalled it.

I don't think any has equalled the classic Model 70 pre-'64 style for reliabilily and none have surpassed it.

I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I have a couple of the FN-produced Model 70s (a .257 Roberts Featherweight and a .338 Win Mag Extreme Weather). Both are nice rifles and are plenty accurate.

My dad has a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .243. It is also accurate, and well-made.

As others have said, they are two of the better actions out there today. If I find myself in the market for a new bolt action rifle anytime soon, it will probably end up being a M70 or Vanguard.

In particular, I think the Vanguard is about the best $500 rifle you can buy. And I think it is well worth the extra $150-200 it costs to step up to a Vanguard from something like a Ruger American or a Savage Axis. They are worlds apart in quality. But sometimes I just want a Model 70.
