Barrel Porting

The damage caused by recoil is a cumulative effect - just because your perception is one thing, doesn't mean it isn't having an effect.

I don't have any guns with that specific barrel porting, but I have a Smith 642 that came with S&W's "powerport" job. It takes the edge off of recoil, and the muzzle blast is somewhere between a normal .38+p and .357 magnum, which is to say it doesn't bother me. I haven't done any comparisons in low-light conditions yet.

I'd be concerned that I was losing some muzzle velocity because of it, but the barrel's 1/4" longer than a normal 642, so I'm guessing it evens out. I can't use snakeshot because of the port, but I've never used any anyway.

Overall I like it, and I've considered getting my other handguns ported as well. It makes shooting more fun.

I had two large frame .357 8 shot revolvers with comps, I still have my S&W 627 V-comp with a removable comp with a 5" barrel, I also had a Taurus 608 4" with factory porting. Both are large steel frame guns, and I can't really say how will they work to keeping recoil down because of the weight, but shooting .38s is very mild almost like shooting a .22, and ..357s are pretty tame too, but they are fairly heavy guns unlike a Glock.

That's all I can contribute except, I'm not sure they are much louder (I guess they are, and can't really say, but I double up on hearing protection), or they have any more flash.

My lighter aluminum S&W 327 8 shot .357 R8 M&P that doesn't have any form of comp's, has about twice the perceived recoil, but is very manageable.

I think I'm gonna buy a Wolf ported barrel and just try it out for:

1. Recoil reduction (or perceived recoil reduction - for you critics)

2. Rapid fire recovery time - or accuracy vs stock barrel for rapid fire.

3. Effect on concealed carry - since barrel will be near an inch longer.

4. Night blinding effect with various rounds vs standard barrel.

5. Any other effects noted.

I will report back eventually!

My prediction right now is that this will be a big improvement, at least on the range, for rapid fire given the high pressures of the .357 SIG round.

We will see.
