Band of Brothers and the M1 Garand.

I also haven't seen Band of Brothers yet, but I do love my Garands. I've got a stock Winchester, a stock Springfield, and a Springfield M1-D sniper that came out of Denmark. I'd like to get one in .308 though, because reasonably-priced .30-06 is getting harder to find. Does anyone know if/when BoB will be coming out on video?

I have had AKs, ARs, FALs, Mini14s, Still have Marlin lever actions. The Garand is my favorite hands down! It is reliable. Hits real hard. You can get low to the ground. It shoulders well and has great sights. It is fast to reload. Ammo in en-bloc clips is easy to carry. And it is the gun America used when we used to win wars.

I know it's "heresy" but I have never been that crazy about the Garand. Shot a few of them, handled a few more, and found them to be awkwardly balanced and overweight, and I didn't like the placement of the controls. It was, of course, the best rifle available to the US in WW2, but IMHO there are MUCH superior weapons out there now in 30-cal, particularly the FAL.

Here is what I did not like about the FAL. Sights where hard to adjust for windage. Box magazines on a battle rifle, in my opinion, are slow and bulky. I did not like the balance.

The Garand balances better for me. En-bloc clips are faster. A battle rifle is not a high capacity pray and spray device. 8 rounds is more than enough if it reloads fast.

Well Dave, I would disagree with just about everything you said. As someone with actual infantry experience, I can assure you that a box magazine is neither slow nor awkward in the field. I can also tell you that you will have precious little time nor opportunity to adjust your sights in the field. Balance is surely an individual judgement, as is ergonomics.

Rick, no big deal. Everything I said was an opinion. I could be wrong. It sure wouldn't be the first time. Just out of curiousity, what war did you fight in and with which weapons?

I'm sorry Dave, I didn't realize you had to actually be in a war to find out that box magazines aren't awkward or slow in the field. That WAS what you were implying, right?

After reading all the praise for the Garand and wondering what the fuss was about, I finally shot a Garand about 3 months ago.

You know what the real genius of Garand is?

His rifle really weighs 8.5lbs., but only when its on a scale, or on the sling when you're hiking.

When you shoulder it and shoot it, I swear it only weighs about 7-7.5 lbs. Something about the ergonomics and balance point makes it very easy to handle.

3 of my good shooting buddies have M1 Garands. I have a severe case of Garand envy. :)

They are a rock solid, heavy duty battle rifle. Very impressive. I want one, but I keep spending my money on other stuff. I should just get one from CMP (gonna have to be after Christmas at least). Probably a Danish one. I'm no collector.

One of the guys that comes out and shoots with us at the Utah TFL shoots is awesome with his Garand. He isn't on line so most of you wouldn't know him, but this rifle just fits him like no other. If he could see it, he could hit it, and fast. And that was including targets out to 600 yards! The other Utah guys can vouch for me, Joe has a Zen like connection to that thing. :)

I wouldn't ever want to be on the receiving end of a good rifleman and a Garand.

Rick, I was just curious because you implied you had experience that would make you more knowledgeable than the average guy. If you didn't have to fire your weapon against a target that was actively trying to kill you, then your experience is about as good as mine then. Just being in the army doesn't make you a fighter any more than being in a garage makes you a car.

KSFreeman,

Ummm, yeah, I'm going to need you to go ahead and watch the rest of Band of Brothers, it really is a good show.

If it weren't for Band of Brothers, the Sopranos, and Get Osama I'd probably just shoot my TV.....with my M1A of course.

Ah, I see. So when I was out in the field, changing magazines in tactical training, the magazines were less awkward and faster than had I been doing it in "real combat."
But you doing it at a range is just as applicable as me doing it in the field?
Is that your position? Just want to clarify.

Your "tactical" training does not equal combat duty. They were drills. Therefore, you have no special knowledge or experience that makes your opinion better than mine.

I have participated in so called "tactical" rifle classes and shooting competitions too. The difference was that I knew my experiences were not the real thing. There was no deadly stress and we both went home at the end of the day.

You are boring me. Give it a rest.

Dave, I may indeed be boring you, but you fascinate me. Wannabes always fascinate me.
I never claimed to have combat experience, but what I do know is that the training I DO have, compliments of the US Army light infantry, is quite a bit more realistic than a couple "tactical rifle classes."
You want stress? Try coordinating a company size attack LIVE fire, all the while trying to juggle actually being tactically correct and accomplishing the mission while simultaneously trying to keep a bunch of 19 year olds from shooting each other accidentally.
No, no one was trying to kill me...but if one of those kids had shot someone, my Batallion Commander would have made me WISH I were dead...

I love the Grand old Garand action, it is one of the most reliable actions IMHO. Dave3006 has a good point Rikwriter. Dont get me involved in this please. I have shot a mini-30, mini-14 and an M1A and the actions are great, I rather have something to load from the top though, Somebody should make a AK-47 with a fixed or detachable mag that you can easily load from the top. I am not talking about an SKS. Even though I love SKS's:D

BoB is the ONLY TV show/series that I have set out to see in the last 2 years. Great work done for and by HBO. Makes the bill much easier to pay. :) I've been talking to some of the guys at work and I'm suprised at how they don't get it. This isn't a "soap" or mini series. It is a well done look at history. One asked what happened to the guys from the first couple of shows. He didn't get it, they had "died/been wounded" and were no longer part of the cast.

I have more than one rifle. I have more than one Garand. I'm sure of what will be found in my gun safe 30 years from now. And they will still be the finest battle rifles, used by our finest men.

THE GARAND??? GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!

GET THE GARAND...............IF YOU LOVE BoB like we ALL do, then you wont be disappointed!!! Ive had one that was handed down to me by my grandfather who brought it back with him from WW2 I let a friend shoot it and a day later HE went out and bought one............GET IT GET IT GET IT

to quote a great man and a hell of a general:

"...the finest battle implement ever divised.."
