I voted for 5 but should have voted for 6. It's already a crime in this country to purchase or attempt to purchase a firearm if you cannot legally own one. Background checks don't preempt that. I believe that anyone who is 18 or older and can legally own a firearm should legally be able to carry said firearm (open or concealed - their choice).

If number 6 was the case then there would be NO crime in this country to purchase or attempt to purchase a firearm . Everyone could purchase a firearm legally. No one would be exempt from purchasing a firearm. Is that what the #6 voters want?

Punish those who break the law, not the ones who keep it...

These laws, do you mean firearm related? What laws would there be in this case?

What extra hoops?
When a man is FREED from jail, he is FREED from jail.

Unfortunately, many are freed because there is no more room for them in prison.

#5
I don't think it's such a bad thing to confirm that the person trying to buy a gun is not a criminal/mental patient.

Beyond that, I don't believe in restrictions.

I voted for number 4. Reason being I think just about everyone and anyone having a gun isn't a great idea. Don't forget the amount of stupid people in America. Not everyone will educate themselves on safty. Not everyone will know the clip release from the hammer drop on a auto. Everyone has a right to defend themselves, but at the same time havin a CCW just isn't for everyone.

O6Nop,
What I actually support isn't in the choices. The same restrictions for those who can legally own a firearm should remain in place (no drug/alcohol abuse, mental illness, convicted felons, etc). However, background checks should go. They don't do anything to prevent crime and are near worthless for preventing those who cannot legally obtain a firearm from getting their hands on a firearm anyway. They basically put an extra unneeded tax on law-abiding citizens purchasing the only material object guaranteed as a right in our Constitution.

I cannot vote, because the correct answer is not up there, that being, possession and carry by anyone passing a background check, PROVIDED THAT said background check only checks for convicted felons and court-adjudicated mentally unstable, not those under a domestic restraining order or accused or convicted of misdemeanors.

Another interesting choice might have been guns are banned for police only, but not to everyone else. :p

I don't totally agree but, I think background checks should be updated/improved. There need to be some (justified) laws where if people break them they can be punished. We shouldn't make it easier for a criminal to get a gun just because they can get one illegally. I don't have any proof that background checks deter illegal gun purchase but from the above quote, it sounds like someone has proof that it absolutely deters it.

Good point, I've also wondered if any profiling is exercised in these checks. You are required to state your ethnic background. I was at a gunshow a while back and my background check went through quickly while a Hispanic man next to me was denied. If he was denied for legal issues, that's one thing, but is it really necessary to require that info? The point is, people are turned down.
Also it denies those who have been late on child support, I'm against 'dead beat' dads but I'm curious what this is for.

If a person can't be trusted with a gun, they shouldn't be out of jail.

The fact that the violent criminal density is high in a given area is BECAUSE OF gun control - a live of violent crime is too easy to survive if none of the victims are allowed to defend themselves.

We've had a spate of bank robberies lately in my area, I wonder how quickly they'd fall off if the perps were ventilated instead of just being meekly handed money and allowed to leave.
