I hit best with a bolt action. So, I'd use either a .30-'06 or a .243, most likely. With my pet '06, anything within 500 yards belongs to me.

Since I'm not concerned about humanitarianism in such circumstances, and I know what my hunting loads do to a deer, coyote or jackrabbit, I'd use a hunting load. I ain't the bloomin' Red Cross. My purpose is to inflict maximum damage.

The average fella is rather discouraged when even a "light" wound means a pound or so of meat gone away. The sight of such wreckage might well be discouraging to his cohorts, as well. If they're focussed on their wounded buddy, I can move to another position for the next shot. The odds are that they'll run out of ambition before I do.
