Bad day at the Skeet range....

Never had a day like this before... So my the interceptor latch on my Remington 1100 Skeet model breaks, the gun maybe has 1000 rounds through it... So it quits on me... So now I have the new 870 Wingmaster that Remington sent me to replace the Wingmaster they never could get to work right.. So the new gun wont eject fired hulls from the chamber... I tried Federal Topgun, Remington Gun Club, Rio and Winchester AA... It will eject the AAs but not without shaving plastic off of the hull.. And yes I cleaned the heck out of it before I shot it.. And cleaned the chamber again with a brush... It appears there is a burr in the chamber.. So now by the end of the week I will be heading off to the gunsmith with two wounded Remingtons.. Good thing I had one of my Berettas in the truck or I would've been very cranky on the ride home.. I've had problems but never had two guns crap out on the same day!!!

I can't hold any ill will toward the 1100 as it has been otherwise flawless for the 8 or so years I've owned it... It was bought new by grandfather in 1980 and never fired.. The 870 on the otherhand is starting off on the wrong foot.. Remington replaced the lemon... And the replacement they sent me doesn't want to work either..

Yikes! This is a day you want to forget. They say, things usually come in three's. Let's hope not. Pop a cold one tonight, relax, and things will get better...

Chin up… there's an old saying among shooters: Your worst day at the range is better than your best day at work. :D

Ouch! I have an 870 Express and have heard that many with the Express have shells frozen in the chamber on new guns, but I also understood that this was a prolem with the Express and not the Wingmaster. Anyhow, the fix for the 870 was to smooth out a rough chamber with steel wool. If you want to give it a try take a look at http://www.aiptactical.com/Page_2.html

It is cold comfort but you are not alone. I've had the same experience with Remington products made in the last ten years, a Wingmaster and an 1100. I can also rhyme of the names of half a dozen friends who've had issues with shabbily-made Remington products.

You did hit on the right answer to owning a Remington.

Good thing I had one of my Berettas in the truck

The answer is: Leave the Remington. Shoot the Beretta.

Equiipment issues are aggravating ...but it seems to me that a good gunsmith will either be able to fix it / or make a recommendation...so you can get back to your gun club.

The 1100 especially should be an easy fix ...

easy chamber polish

I saw in old magazine, a shotgun chamber being polished by; running a full thread bolt through the base of a hull then running a nut up to the base to hold it together. chuck it up in your drill and apply lapping compound to hull. i remember seeing a photo of the chamber and thought it looked like a mirror.

We had the same problem today shooting clays with my High Standard 200 12ga pump. Once in a while it would cycle but 70% of the time it would hang up.
The common factor, Remington Gun Club shot. I wonder if there's something funky with the shells? I couldn't dupicate the problem at home either.

Sorry bout your luck. I have an 1100 that was jammin pretty often and I replaced the o-rings in it and it hasnt jammed in since I replaced them, maybe 200 rounds ago. My 870 express on the other hand is my go to skeet, dove, duck, turkey, everything but deer gun. If it flies I got my 870 in my hand. We shoot skeet about everyother weekend and alot of back to back weekends. Never had a malfuntion out of it maybe except for me short stroking the action. I love it, seems like you just got a streek of bad luck there. Dont give up on the remis, mine was passed down form my dad and im sure has 10's of thousands of rounds through it. There is almost no finsh where I grab with my strng hand or where my check hits the but stock.

Man, that stinks. I shoot Trap a lot, I have an 1100 and my wife has an 870, never any issues. I use Remmington Gun Club stuff from Dicks, nothing special. I'll knock on wood now. ;)

I have other shotguns... I just didn't expect multiple failures on the same day!!

Yes it should be... If I knew the 1100 better I would probably attempt it myself.. But I would rather have the gun gone through and fixed right..

Odd. I know someone who has a wingmaster, I've never seen a short shuck or ejection failure during clays on his.

Me, I've short shucked a few times. Come to think of it, I need to go practice with the snap caps to stop doing that...

I grew up on 870s... And currently own 2 other 870s... Its not operator error... Its definitely a chamber issue on this particular gun...

Dremel time! Can you actually see the burr? Might want to knock it out with a dremel tool. I polished my 870 chamber with my tool, it turned out well.

You should take them to a gunsmith if that's what makes you comfortable ...but its also a chance to learn a little more about your shotgun.

I always have a hard time - completely breaking a gun down to a bare receiver the first time ...and I won't pretend to be able to re-grind sears, or internal trigger components with any confidence ...but taking them completely apart - and replacing parts is usually no big deal. I pulled a Benelli shotgun fully apart a few months ago ...and learned a lot ...and found a piece of shot - stuck in the trigger mechanism that I couldn't blow out with compressed air. Its just a matter of getting a good towel on the workbench ...with a good sharp light ...and maybe some magnification ...and taking some photos / maybe having a good illustrated parts breakdown handy ....and take it apart one piece at a time. Sometimes I even take 2 or 3 pieces off ....then put them back on ...and make sure I understand if there is a left and right ...or something tapered ...that might be important.

An egg carton is a good place to set pieces into the egg cups ...one at a time, in sequence, as they come off... lots of little tricks ...and some patience ...make it pretty easy. Its not about brute force and hammers ...its about probing / and looking ....and being careful and precise - and if you get frustrated / step away from it for awhile.

But do what makes you most comfortable. It is frustrating when a gun fails to perform 100% ....but then, that is why we keep them clean and well lubed ...so hopefully its a rare occurrence / but parts do break ...or a piece of shot or something gets into a place where it doesn't belong...

There have been several threads on rough chambers in Remington 870s. IINM, there were related to the Express models, not the Wingmasters. In many postings there has been a failure to differentiate between the two models which may lead to confusion.
