Not sure how to categorize this, or how it can be best utilized.....but I'm having fun tinkering with all the possibilities. Own a number of Ruger 10/22's, but this really appealed because of the short barrel and take down feature.

Found a compact case from VooDoo Tactical that bundles the package together with room for extra mags. Not a fan of the "saw-tooth scope rails", so the factory mount had to go. Added a green dot sight and machined the base to sit lower, using the provided holes in the receiver. Pistol grip was replaced with a MagPul that offers storage space for spare batteries and adjustment screwdriver.

Thinking about shortening the barrel and re-threading for a comp.

Interesting.

Is it light enough to carry easily?

Looks like you could set up the pack for a MOLLE or similar strap on the outside of a backpack.

Not sure how useful for defense while hiking, but looks like a good survival setup.

It looks like it would be crazy muzzle heavy. I'd rather just have a takedown rifle. More shootable and just as easy to pack.

I agree it’s a cool looking gun, but as a backpacking/survival gun it seems a GLOCK 9mm would be lighter and more useful.

I'd think a five-seven would reach out as far(ther) with target sights, while weighing much less and being smaller than a cut-down 10/22.

Really cool gun and I see its appeal for plinking.
Perhaps a bi-pod would be a nice addition?

Although, its probably not the right tool for precision shooting in a Backpacking/Survival roll (small game).
Its a lot heavier than a long-barrel Buckmark or Ruger, but the dot limits its abilities at a distance, its only as good as your eyes and the quality of the dot combined.
My 7.25" Buckmark Hunter on good ammo will easily out-shoot its Fastfire dot and my eyes.
A small scope would extract more of what your 10/22 has to offer.

On the plus side, with little/no recoil and no slide to hit you in the cheek bone... it probably can be shot kind of like a rifle for better accuracy standing up without support, and in that position the dot may become much more refined close-up?

For backpacking/survival I'd probably opt for the smallest/lightest bolt action .17HMR I could find and put a small scope on it, and take my Glock 27 of course.

Perhaps the wrong forum but for backpacking etc. look at the Kel Tec SU 16. I am not fond of the .22 rimfire for a survival gun.

Too big. too bulky...but it ain't the worst choice for a takedown popgun.
Would rather pack a Calico M110 ;) 100 rds per mag tops everything else out there.
fullsize

Bring back the Springfield M6 Scout -- a foot longer than the Ruger Charger, but a pound lighter and more flexibility with its .22 LR/.410 over/under chambering. The semiauto Charger has it beat on firepower, though.

Still looking for the quintessential reason one must have this gun....so far the best explanation is because it's fun. Guess I'm not going to feel guilty for acquiring a gun for the "fun of it". Now buying it for my primary concealed carry piece would've had me questioning my sanity.

Grouse

I think it looks great, in Idaho we have grouse and they are not smart but have yummy breast meat, that set up would be perfect, we also have white tail, elk, bears, wolves and cougars. I usually carry a .40 or .45 in the woods for my dogs, wolves don't like domestic dogs. If I am heading into big bear country I pack a .44 mag, but that would waste a grouse, still if I had yer gun too and got a grouse I could spice it up with bear spray.

Mystro, how accurate is that keltec 22 mag?
Good concept, sort of a poor man's 5.7.

I have a Colt Scout Buntline revolver with dual 22, 22 mag cylinders. Nowhere near the fire powers though. It will shoot 22 WRF in the mag cylinder, can the keltec handle 22 WRF? If so you have a lot of versatility for hunting with just a mag swap.

Shockingly accurate. Great fiber optic sights. Its the most bizzar handgun experience. The 22mag is loud but the gun feels like a video game controller. It makes my Ruger MK2 feel like a anchor. If it wasn't for the noise and muzzle flash, I would swear it was a toy. Absolutely no felt recoil but the gun weighs like a plastic water gun. You rapid fire streams of 22mag very accurately where ever you point. Full auto fast. I can rapid fire 10 shot groups in the size of a ping pong ball at 10 yards. What made it my trail gun is its ridiculous light weight, thin with 31 rounds of 22mags on tap. Slow it down and its a coyote hunters dream. I would not feel at a disadvantage if I had to press it into a self deffence roll. I highly recomend one if you can find one.
