Back to the drawing board..... .45 carry gun

The criteria seem to have "shifted".....

and that's okay. Let me suggest a Kimber Pro Carry with the aluminum frame. Mine is quite comfortable to carry IWB with a good holster and belt. It is definitely lighter than the stainless steel frames and mine has been excellent for both accuracy and relliability. Good shooting:)

Thanks everyone

After the responses so far, I'm leaning towards these, in this order (quite a shift!):

1. Wilson KZ 45 (blued steel & polymer, 4" bbl, 9+1, all the bells and whistles) - $1,125 - beautiful gun - makes my heart go pitter patter, but a little steep, and the wait will be 4-5 months. Hey, everyone deserves at least ONE custom 1911, right. :D
2. Kimber "Ultra 10" (stainless and polymer, 3" bbl, double stack 10+1, most of the bells and whistles), price: $ [unknown] (big downside of this gun is not black color - not good for CCW, IMO - also the bbl is soooo dang short - I dunno)
3. Sig P245 (hey, all I hear is great things)
4. Glock 36 (thinking the single stack is more reliable, and more concealable)
5. Para baby DA - has it all, including the DA, but what's the price, and what are the drawbacks, if any?
6. Glock 30 (have it)
7. HK (don't like the sound of that bulkiness)

Please keep it coming....Someone said in Cedric's separate similar thread on the subject of CCW that they can't see why the Wilson is $500 more than the Kimber. Does ANYONE ELSE see why???

Just to be devil's advocate:

1) I spoke with Wilson Combat last night and the current wait on the KZ45C is 7-8 months!

2) I've heard (not 1st hand experience) that the Glock 30 is one of the most reliable glocks around. So I don't think you're getting much by going to the 36 other than a thinner pistol. Also, if you haven't, try it at the range and see if it's more of a bear to shoot because of its skinnier grip.

Cedric

Why don't you try the grip and shoot some of these choices before spending the $600-800 that they'll cost? Compact .45's are often pretty nasty to shoot. If you need a carry .45 and that much capacity, it must be for an environment where you are regularly exposed to great danger - so features like pointability are more important than capacity. And you should decide whether you prefer a system like the SIG P245, with a firing pin block and a DA/SA trigger, or the Glock system, compared to carrying a compact M1911A1 clone cocked-and-locked.

You should check out the used market as well - lots of people buy compact .45's, discover they suck for range use, have worse-than-average recoil, excessive muzzle flash with some brands of ammo, and in short gain little over a larger but still compact product like the SIG Glock or H&K, so they dump them.

VVG: I know it would be optimal to be able to shoot the choices before making a final decision on a pistol, but unfortunately, it's sometimes not realistic. I have a similar CCW thread going, and I've been fortunate to find -some- of the pistol to shoot (all the glocks), but can't for the life of me find some of the others around here at the ranges. They just plain suck for rental options. I'd love to be able to rent a Kahr k9, HK45C/9C, Any 1911 - esp. compacts, and many others, but the reality is no range within 90 miles of the major metro area I live in has any of those to rent.

Truely frustrating! I'm relegated to gleaning as much advice as I can from as many people as I can, then make the most informed decision possible.

I'm sure I'm not the only one...

Sorry for my rant, I'm just a bit frustrated. :)

Regards,
Cedric

Alrighty now...

Given the shift, and the fact that the KZ requires waiting, I'd look into the Kimbers and Springfields which can be had immidiately virtually anywhere for between $550 and $1000 depending on the options you desire.
