AWB Poll WE ARE LOSING

Raising Your Blood Pressure Over Nothing

The AWB will die and there is no doubt. The congress of both parties will not touch that "third rail" of politics. It is so sharply divided, no politician will go on record with a vote because that specifies his position and takes away his ability to tap dance around it later. The repubs won't touch it because they are afraid of the NRA, and the dems don't control congress so they can't do jack.

No worries. It's stone dead.

Point...

Polls be damned. In the end this is a Constitutional issue.

Saw an IV with Ron Paul in which he said that an argument based on constitutional merit was one of the weakest (in the eyes of his peers) that he could bring to the floor.

The two poll choices are a shameless distortion of the actual AWB issue. It serves them right for the poll to backfire.

Should Congress renew the federal ban on assault weapons?
Choice Votes Percentage of 18015 Votes
Yes. Military-style firearms should be banned. 5082 28%
No. People have the right to own any firearm they want. 12933 72%

Scott Simon on NPR radio, in a weekly review program, just discussed the AWB and chose to quote a poll that showed 2/3 of Americans in favor of renewal. He then interviewed a gun shop owner who did a great job of putting all the hype into proper perspective. The question was what gun buyers use these guns for. The short answer was that they are fun to shoot. They have not been banned all along, only certain features. I thought it well balanced, all things considered. It showed how silly any hysteria over the ban sunset would be. The last crowning comment from the gunshop guy was that any legal prohibition doesn't mean anything to bad guys anyway.

No one is going into the territory of a citizen being entitled to a militarily competitive weapon. Unfortunately, the 2nd Amendment is not considered a strong case, everyone lost in the trees.

Ask a liberal if they think that this should be put to a popular vote due to the polls which say that a majority support the ban. Then ask the liberal if he would support putting "gay marriage" to a popular vote since an equal amount are against that as well.

That the liberals rely on the socialist "Utilitarian Theory" of rights is no surprise. They think that if they can muster 50% +1 to believe that some act, some right is not worthy enough of protection, then it can be legislated away. Only a fool would hold onto that double-edge sword.
