Auto Pistol Decision....Input needed. HELP!!!!

While I like my other firearms, my glocks hold up the best for any weather at anytime. They are reliable, and if you do not want the non-neutered mags, go with the 10 rounders and live with it. Get whatever round you like. I consider the box stock 357 sig to be pretty impressive. But the longer the barrel, the happier they are. The 10mm rules in glocks. And the 45 is pretty solid by itself in my opinion. Just get the right round for what you want. If an animal is wounded, I doubt you would have a problem with any of the above if you could get a good shot. The animal moving is going to be your problem.

I have several glocks, and the more rounds I run through them the more accurate I get. But they are different from most other guns, so major accuracy differences can show up. My friend who loves 1911 types thought my glock was broken. After several sessions and lots of rounds, he now understands he has become good with one type of firearm, and is getting better with another.

I like the glock cause they are almost impervious to being inside the waist band, I wipe em down after the day just cause I feel guilty. They are light weight, and if you can afford the magazines, they hold a lot of rounds.

355sigfan, if you have a Beretta 92FS, don't forget that it has ~.5" more barrel length than the GLOCK, which gives it even more velocity (50 fps or so?). That would make the gap even wider between the 9mm and 357.

Take a look at the Kahr K40 or MK40. If you want self defence, the MK 40 will be great. Not cheap but a fine weapon.

Ditto agtman 's suggestion on the multi-talented G20. The .45 and 357 SIG just don't cut it for critters, and if you only use 10 mm for field work you won't have to buy all that much ammo.

Handy - Although Federal's website lists their 357 SIG premium ammo as Hydra Shok, it's actually the High Shok bullet - no post in the cavity. There's no way of you knowing that without having some in hand (surprised myself when I bought some) or looking at the product codes, tho. In the product codes, every caliber in the Hydra Shok line but 357 SIG has "HS" (for Hydra Shok) in it, but the 357 SIG just has "S".

Thanks Tree,

That's what I get for believing anything I read on the internet.

I would like to second the vote for the multicaliber Glock 20 or 29.

Of course, you could do the same with some of the .45/.400 Corbon barrrels available for many guns.

If you want an autopistol and want to deal with wild animals 10mm Auto is a hell of a lot better solution than .45 ACP or .357 Sig. From a proper platform it will recoil less than a .357 Magnum. And I know of at least one Cor-Bon hunting load (180gr JSP @ 1320 FPS) that DOES meet the 500 ft-lbs at 100 yards requirement.

I'd also actually SHOOT a 10m before you assume it recoils too much. Anyway, there is no free ride: if you want to deal with woodland critters, you ought to have a magnum-power-level firearm.

I'd say go with your original inclination and get the Ruger P97. It is tough and accurate and affordable, recoil is not bad, ammunition is more available than .357 Sig or 10mm, and it will last and last and last. 45 ACP should do the trick on threats with 2 or 4 legs. Just practice and become proficient. The P97 will not let you down.

I don't have experience with the Ruger P97 but I do own a Ruger P94 in .40cal and it's a great gun...have you thought of .40cal? it's a pretty good all around caliber and the P94 that I own has been the most reliable handgun I have ever owned,
Tony.
