ATF Project Gunrunner

An article from the New American: http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/congress/7272-atf-boss-threatened-with-contempt-charge

From Dave Workman (Seattle Gun Rights Examiner) who opines about the CBS report on Congressional feet in AZ: http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-seattle/update-congressional-gunrunner-investigators-arizona

Then there is an April 20th editorial by Laura Carlsen (Foreign Policy in Focus) which was just on Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/laura-carlsen/obamas-mexicogate_b_853788.html The responses there are interesting (even yours, Tom :p).

May 1 is the deadline to take comments on the proposed change in rules.

It is after this that we will see what happens (and I believe the "fix" is already in). See this thread for links and to send your own responses in.

Actually, that's somebody else.

Still, it's good to know folks on the other side of the fence are questioning this as well. Perhaps some inquiries from their end can help get the ball rolling.

That Laura Carlsen piece (which is a very decent overview) has been picked up by several news and blog sites on the "left" side of the spectrum, in addition to HuffPo -- Counterpunch and Common Dreams, just to name a couple. So this story is getting out; and it certainly should be of interest to a lot of people, regardless of their political identification.

MSNBC did discuss Project Gunrunner last year, but have lost interest in the story for some reason.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39345370/

Headline: ATF TARGETS GUN DEALERS...

And it talks about going after "corrupt dealers" as "high value targets" and taking on narco cartel leaders, not just straw buyers.

Actual quote from the story involving the only dealer discussed:

The Mexican national, his father and his brother have all been charged with illegal weapons purchases in the case. No charges have been filed against the firearms dealer and he is not accused of any wrongdoing.

Another set of straw buyers charged, no cartel leaders discussed at all, and no "corrupt dealer" anywhere in sight.

With accuracy like that, it is probably just as well that MSNBC not cover the investigation any further.

Thanks for the link. Sent one off, but you know....it's tough to write a coherent note, incorporating thoughts regarding the long gun reporting proposition, along with the topic of this thread, and the results of things like this:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/04/28/americas-war-arming-mexican-cartels/
....and not come off as either extremely surly, or the writer of a Saturday Night Live skit.

Welcome to the Party, Wayne (about damn time...).

This, from FoxNews:
Sources tell Fox News that NRA Executive Director Wayne LaPierre will call for Holder's resignation in a Saturday morning speech at the NRA's annual meeting in Pittsburgh.
You can read the rest at the link.

Now this may be pure symbolism by Wayne, or it actually could mean the 800 lb. Gorilla is getting peeved. I hope it is the latter....

"Welcome to the Party, Wayne (about damn time...)."

My sentiments precisely! The NRA has been very late in coming to this "party".

If MSM would pick this up it could be the undoing of their chosen messiah....uh but that's why they have not and will not. The latest reports on this scam reveal that it was approved by people far up the chain of command.

Keep pushing!

One can hope that this can lead to some actual beneficial change.

I know, long hope, but still.

"approved by people far up the chain of command."

It's a long-held axiom that, if you don't know anything about something, it might be dangerous to mess with it. We can be pretty sure that most of the people "far up the chain" don't know much about guns.

Does anyone have any info on how much the average BATFE employee actually knows about guns?

I suspect that, the higher up the chain, the less knowledge.

Kinda like our government in general, I guess.

Best,

Will

There is still a lot of life left in this story.

Unfortunately the news will be completely overshadowed by the death of Bin Laden. It is no coincidence that Holder is appearing before a Congressional committee tomorrow, that news will be COMPLETELY overshadowed by the continued reporting on Bin Laden.

Yes, it will be overshadowed; but I hope you're not seriously suggesting that the Abbottabad attack was deliberately timed to distract public attention from this hearing... that seems, um, improbable.

I'm suggesting just the opposite, that Holder agreed to go before a committee because Bin Laden was killed. There is no better time to let bad news happen, then when the public is distracted by some really good news.

Tag.

I want to keep following this. I think the rot goes pretty far up the chain.

My thinking is this was a backdoor attempt to show "We need more restrictive gun laws to help our Southern Neighbor."

If they could show these guns were comming from the US and then demand more control, it would have been harder for law abiding citizen to protest.
