Assume you had these guns, and you had to choose one

Morgan

There have been HK USP's that have KB with 40's as well. As with the glock most all are poor reloads and not in any way the guns fault. For that Matter I have seen Sigs in 40 KB personally for the same reason. If reloaders would be more carefull there would be alot less KB's

Neither ! I would get a G32 and get a stock .40 barrel for it for $150 then get a barsto 9mm barrel for $200. This way I would have all three calibers in on gun.
But if I had to choose between the three, I would go with G23 only because I can also get a .357 and 9mm barrel for it where as you can not get a .40 or a .357 barrel for the G19. If this is all too confusing, then go with the G19 like every one else recommended. Hope this helps.

355sigfan; Must I preface everything I say on this forum with a IMHO? Of course there's no ABSOLUTES in life! What about all the civilians who pack 5 or 6 shot revolvers? Are they undergunned? IF you're cop you have a cops mindset. Let's see, 13 rounds in your Glock with two mags that makes hopefully enough bullets to get you through the night! Just leave me and my "civilian" mindset alone! And if I want to say it I will-"CIVILIANS DON'T NEED MORE THAN 10 ROUNDS".

Acording to the rules that you posted there are three guns to choose from and only three. I would choose the Glock 19 because it is superior to the H$K for a number of valid reasons, price, rust resistance, durability and reliablity. The Glock 19 has a fantastic track record for excellence in all of these areas. The H$K is over priced and has a much deserved reputation for breaking firing pins and is far to big and clunky. Only dependable guns are interesting and useful. I would spec my Glock 19, with night sights and as many high cap mags as I could carry. I would also request our duty load of Federal 9BPLE Plus P Plus 115 grain JHP. Theres nothing better, it turns the 9mm into a real man.

If there are kids in the house, get the HK. If it's just ME, I'd get the G-23. It's really more of a personal preference sort of decision. I just like Glocks more than those overpriced HK's. If you want an awsome homedefense gun that you don't plan on babying, go with a Ruger P-series and save some money so you can afford to practice. I'd probably get a P-94 for the home... de-cocker model of course.

The G-23 just might be the best of the lot. Power, size, ammo more affordable all the time. True, 9x19 is a bit less money, but the .40 is not really bad. The full capacity magazines may not be TRULY necessary, but they don't hurt. And, if the lean times continue, you can still swap them and draw a lot of boot.

Also, I strongly suggest that when you sell the G-19, DO NOT make a package deal with any spare full-capacity mags you have. Keep 'em and peddle them separately, later on, for more money.

No slight intended, but it should be said: Please, PLEASE use a proper holster with top edge reinforcemnt which covers the trigger. If you MUST carry without a proper holster, use one of the gizmos that fits behind trigger and blocks it. Or else reconcile ourself to chamber-empty carry.

I extend my sympathy for your financial plight. Most of us have been there. I trust things will improve.

I would keep the Glock 23 although I prefer the Model 19. Why would I keep the Model 23? I could keep a couple of the 19 high capacity magazines and down the path buy a Bar-sto 9mm barrel to shoot 9mms through it. You can also buy a Sig 357 barrel to use with the 40 S&W magazines. I do not know why but I have never cared for the feel of H&Ks in my hand. Regards, Richard

Hey J.Parker, ...

Now that you stuck your foot in your mouth, I agree with .355 SIGFAN.

I know now, how many rounds you "NEED"...

If I could only have one, I'd have to go w/ the G23 & 13rds of .40 (Rem. 165 GS would do nicely).

However, currently my home defense gun is a G19 loaded w/ 17rds of 124+p Golden Sabre.

I feel the .40 is more powerful(how much is open to debate), but I definitely feel well armed w/ an excellent pistol like the G19 and one of quite a few quality 9mm loads available!

Go w/ the one that you shoot best & feels best in your hand.

Good luck w/ your decision.

Best,
long shot!

Thanks for all the replies. So far the totals are:

Glock 19 9 votes
Glock 23 12 votes
HK USP 4 votes

While finances are definitely an issue for me (I am a college student), I can afford ammo for whatever gun I decide on. Actually I have bought these guns all with in the past month or so. I knew in the beginning that I could only afford one, but I thought I would buy several and shoot them to find out which was best for me. The problem is that I like them all.

My HK is stainless so rust is not an issue. I think that the Glocks are excellent guns but they do have such a following that people often don't give other guns a chance. I currently own the 19 and HK and I just bought a 23 but don't have it yet. I have shot one at the range though. Both the 19 and HK have worked flawlessly for me. I have fired around 200 rnds out of each with no problems. One feature of the HK that I like is the decocker/safety. It makes me feel more comfortable with a chambered round. I know that the Glock has the three safeties but if the trigger gets pulled it is going off. The Glock does have an edge though since it is ultra simple to operate.

Bdog - frankly, who gives a rat's ass what we all think?

These are all fine weapons. If you must reduce your inventory to just one, keep the one you shoot best, or just like best. I think you just like stirring the pot ;).

Hope you can figure out a way to keep them all. I'll say what I've said before (should make it my tagline) - "Never Sell a Good Gun."

Put down a vote from me for the 23. I think the USP is a little big in comparison (though I'm getting a USP 9mm Compact soon; already got the mags), and between the 19 and 23, I'd take the larger caliber for an extra 2 rounds (though I have a P99 in 9mm because I'll take the 9 for 4 rounds). I'll give up 2 or 3 rounds for a larger caliber, but not more than that.

J. Parker

Civilians don't need more than 10 rounds until they do. There is an argument that if you get into a fire fight as a civilian you may need even more ammo than myself. I can call for back up and I have a shotgun in my Patrol car do you have those tools available probably not. So if all you have is your handgun you may need every round you can get.
