Assault weapon ban law hypothetical Q?

It appears to me that this assault weapons discussion is drifting off into places unknown, but certainly having no relation to the original subject. Usually a proper buriel is the end result when a discussion regarding a particular subject runs it's course. This being an alleged free country, those who wish to carry on with the current discussion please enjoy. But as for me, I'm oudda'ere! Be well all.

Im trying to behave everyone...

Though I think fortunatly at this time, I dont see a new assualt ban coming. Even if it did, it would be as likely in the near-term as a russian sub getting stuck on our coast by accident.

Whoops Glenn and Tom, sorry, already had a movie about that too. "The Russians Are Coming."

If the political climate changes, I may feel its possible then, but I will with hold judgement til that time. That is unless that sub does pop up and get stuck.

Glenn, I'm sorry if you took what I had to say the wrong way. I had in no way accused anyone of misbehaving, or saying anything wrong for that matter. I stated the discussion had nothing to do with the subject matter for quite some time. That was it, period. Please, let me know if I'm wrong.

I'm also against removing what people write on this forum a little too quickly, which I've personally experienced, never to be seen again. But then I have no say in the matter and just accept it.

I'm looking forward to reading your next post on another subject and please feel free to write anything you like. Bye-bye.

Dang, I was shouting "WOLVERINES!!!!!" so loud I forgot the original topic!:D

They can, and do write everything they want the world to be into proposed legislation. Seems like nearly every year some elected member of the Congress introduces a bill (or an attachment to one) to ban guns, repeal the 2nd Amendment, and such like items...and thats just the stuff we notice about our firearms rights.

Think of all the crap they propose about everything else?!!!!!

Generally, the wilder ideas don't get any more than token support, and wither away, until the usual suspects can legally introduce them again.

But every so often, there is a "perfect storm" conjuction of political will, public support and a percieved problem that results in some kind of sweeping new gun control proposals actaully getting to a vote. The 1994 crime bill (the Assault Weapons Ban) is a clear example.

Remember, it passed by a single vote.

And many people have worked hard ever since then to keep the fear of these "terrible weapons in the hands of everyone" (meaning specifically ordinary law abding citizens, because in their heart of hearts, even the stauchest rabid anti guner must admit that no law stops someone willing to break it) in the forefront of the public (and political) eye.

Unfortunately for them, those pesky terrorists have stolen their thunder. People are fond of saying the world changed that September, but it didn't. What did change was a large segment of the US finally woke up.

When it comes to the physical safety of Mom, Pop, and all the kiddies, the rare wackjob going on a shooting rampage is chump change compared to organized groups of people willing to hijack airliners and fly them into buildings to kill THOUSANDS of people at a time!

Suddenly, gun control didn't seem so important to most folks, we had better and more useful things to do. And besides, might be nice to have a good gun if "them terrierists ever have the guts to show up here in person!"

They can (and will) write anything into proposed bills, but thanks to the lesson politicians learned in 94 (and which most haven't forgotten) they know that no matter how much some of them might want to take a big chunk of our guns away, or just make them significantly harder to get, its political poison. They got the AWB passed in the summer of an election year, and that November, we threw a lot of them out. It wasn't Newt's "Contract with America" that changed the balance of power in Congress that election, it was ticked off gun owners, of both parties! The losers that year know who did it to them, and why. And they have admitted it, amongst themselves. They aren't going to "shoot themselves in the foot" ;) that way again soon, if ever.

And, now more than ever, with all the crap going on with our economy, energy, etc., you pick an issue, there's lots to choose from, making voters MORE upset with politicans by adding in gun control is not somthing a wise politicial operator will do.

Sadly, they aren't all wise, in so many ways. The real gun control fanatics in govt don't have a lot of traction these days. Doesn't stop them, they don't go away. But currently, they are spinning hard, but not going far.

If nothing else, people would wonder why the time and tax dollars were being wasted on an issue the majority of the American public doesn't support. I'd argue that, if we do our part, gun control as a political issue is all but done with.

Glenn - alleged free American!
Oh yeah? What's the capital of Texas, commie?

Hey Tom,

I am not Glen, but the current capital of Texas is Austin. It was Waterloo if I remember my American History right.

If I may Tom, Glen and others. I may be ordinary, or then again I may be rare, who knows. I know my local senators and represenitives, as well as a couple of sitting secretaries. My family isnt that politically conected, but we have been a long time business owner for years and between everything over the years you meet people. And yes, I do know my Fed and local congress_folk not just by name. Shoot, some I have known before they were ever elected when I was a child. From all of a few connections, there are bigger fish to fry, so to speak, with congress as a whole. My conversations with my congressmen, or should I say congress-people over the last couple of years leads me to believe many national issues arent so much important as the topic, and the partisan politics of it are.

For the most part they seem to say that gun control or firearms in general right now is a poison pill.

Tom and Glen, and others, forgive me, I know this isnt a political forum, but keeping this firearms related, I dont see we have much to worry about from congress in the immediate future beyond grandstanding. Everyone worries about each election. I worry more about the 2014 election with congress, then I do about the presidential election right now.

Fishing Cabin:

I suspect you are correct. Gun control is not a viable issue for the Dems to take up. I suspect Obama can't win unless a similar phenomenon to the last election occurs. As Glen Beck says, "I'd vote for my shoe before I'd vote for Obama."

My representive cast the final vote for the AWB. I have never forgotten that betrayal. Unfortunately he lives in luxury on his Congressional retirement. He started out as a bus boy at a local restaurant. The American dream story, but he blew it!

According to the documentary Red Dawn, it's Houston.

Fishing Cabin, we're just being facetious. You'll find many of us in agreement with you.

Hey Glenn, you suppose it would be wise to get Kid Rock for the bag pipe playin with all them dope plants around? :o

Sorry Tom.

The chief proponent of gun control in the US congress has an 89 percent failure rate when it comes to getting his proposed legislation passed. See upper left hand corner:

Just got back from Austin, full of hippies and weirdos with tatoos and wild hair.

Horrors, better go up to a cave in Hill Country and wait for the next AWB.

BTW, folks - as moderators we find it amusing when someone says they are so annoyed that they are leaving the forum or a conversation and it is obvious they are still following the show.

If you are leaving, leave. :D

The only thing I can see right now is the proverbial pendulum swinging to our side for right now, then there may at some point be a bit of equalization.

Laws, as well as the popularity for them kind of ebb and flow similar to the tide. Or at least in my view.

Tom and Glenn, beyond my other coursework I have now, I will make it a point to watch Red Dawn again soon so I am not left out in the dark...

My first visit to Texas was Austin, in the early '90's. We were playing SxSW, and it seemed a pretty metropolitan place...nothing like I expected.

Then I was sternly informed by numerous Texans that Austin ain't Texas.

The last time I was in Austin was a few years back. All I can remember is heading south on 35, looking for I-10. I can remember laredo, pharr, brownsville, and elpaso more.

Oh btw, I walked accross the border once then. It didnt take me long to come back to the US.

Too bad I am not a hippie, I could have fun... But then again everyone here knows me and expects me to be responsible. Ruins the fun dontcha know.
