Assault Motorcycles

Dunno if they're still doing it, but GM was adding a software speed limiter to its 4th generation Camaros/Firebirds if the car wasn't ordered with VR rated tires. This was the sucky part of the deal, since you had to buy the cheesy "sport" wheels and mediocre Goodyear skins to avoid the speed limit, though that money would have been better spend on aftermarket gear (I have Pirelli P7000s on now, very nice).

There are all sorts of rumors going around about the next generation of OBD (On Board Diagnostics). Stuff like, the OBD system will record your speed excursions so that law enforcement can use the data against you in traffic court.

I haven't even got close to the reported top end on my F-body. Maybe I'll get out to west Texas or Montana one of these days...

Gee Rob I was beginning to think that you dropped off the planet! Where have you been? I got rid of my VR4 a few years ago. It handled pretty well, but weighs too much. The other think is that if you drive at sustained speeds in excess of 100mph you will severely shorten the life expectancy of the engine. Because the car is so much cheaper than a Porsche and capable of such high speed, they were initially popular in Germany, but with the shorter engine life sales slowed. HKS does make a nice set of equipment for it that can be added in stages that will build up to 450hp, a 50% increase. Take it easy on acceleration though, the transmission and clutch has a tough time with that much power.

If I am correct, Zach's original post was an attempt to draw an analogy to manufacturers whose products are considered "dangerous" and collectively trying to CYA in a huddle.

The march of technology won't allow it. Yes, I have pushed 180 in a "controlled race enviornment". There are more frightening speeds dependent upon the course. You want blood sport, visit the Isle of Mann.

The sportbikes marketed here are direct products of racing engineering. They are not necessarily about top end only, though that is a niche in every lineup. The current trend is horses per pound it seems. True speed comes in suprising packages.

Anyway, bikes are not cars and never will be.
When they all ride the same bike on the track we are doomed on the street to mediocrity.

I remember when the V-Max first showed up, somewhere in 1985-187???

Anyway there was a dealer just a few miles from me, I had a Suzuki 1000 then, and went into the dealer to get some small parts for my scooter...

Anyway, I wuz talking to the guy, and B4 I knew it, I had a V4 'tween my knads.
I hopped onto I74(Galesburg, IL), and was heading toward Peoria...at 130MPH, and I still hadn't left 4th gear (whewww!!!)

I popped 5th, and it immediately went to over 155, and I backed off, and it wasn't really done yet in that gear...

I wanted one, but I also wanted to live a few more years too, so I passed up a real good deal on getting a new one.

And, uhhh, it weren't a Ninja bike either, but definitely had the cajones for it.

A few years later, I mellowed out some, and bought a Fat Boy.
Now it was slow, but Gaawwwddd, it sure did tickle the ladies.. Never did figure out why though, what with all that vibration and everyting... ;) ;)

Best Regards,
Don

The most foolish mistake we could make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms;
History shows that all conquerers who have allowed their subjected people to carry arms have prepared their own fall.

"Corrupt the young, get them away from religion. Get them interested in sex. Make them superficial, and destroy their rugged- ness.
Get control of all means of publicity, and thereby get the peoples' mind off their government by focusing their attention on athletics, sexy books and plays, and other trivialities.
Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on controversial matters of no importance."

I`ve had my present Harley (85 Wide Glide) over a hundred on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. Not one of the brightest moments of my life! My Vette supposedly will do 172 mph. Who cares? I don`t.
The problem with the crotch rockets is inexperienced people buy them as they`re relatively inexpensive for their godawful speed. The bike is too fast for their reflexes. I`ve ridden a couple and I wasn`t comfortable with my reactions to them. I`ve been riding over 30 years and I wouldn`t consider myself qualified to own one. To each his own.
