Ashley Express sights?

Anyone here have Ashley Express sights on their glock(s), or any other pistol for that matter? I am referring to the tritium front, v-shaped non-tritium rear set up.

I had the opportunity to check out a Glock with Ashley's the other day and although I didn't get to fire it, it seemed that I could acquire a sight picture much faster with them than I can with my factory night sights on all my Glocks. It just seemed far easier and faster to align a single dot with a V than it is to align three dots on the night sights that I have.

Any TFL'ers have these sights? Do you believe that they actually speed up your sight acquisition as I believe they would mine? I may just have to pick up a set and give them a try. Any feedback before I spend the $$?

Thanks in advance.

i set up one of our swat guys with the ashley big dot trinium front and the novak half goast rear.its a mean sight for cqb work.it seems to fix the elevation trouble that most people incurr with the ashley rear.

Rainbow Six,

I have a set of the Ashley standard dot sights (non-tritium) on a Glock 34. They work pretty well, although I have not tested them very expensively.

I put a set of D.R. Middlebrook's VMAX Pro-Sights on a Kimber (these have a deeper 'vee' and a 2 mm fiber optic front sight. These are really great for competition, but unfortunately lose visibility quickly when the light goes down. I prefer the deeper 'vee' so perhaps a good compromise would be a Middlebrooks rear (they are adjustable for elevation) and an Ashley front (with tritium insert).

To answer your question, this system definitely speeds up sight acquisition - especially if your eyes aren't what they used to be (like mine). For CQ stuff they are hard to beat - the only question I have is the accuracy of Ashleys beyond 15-20 yards. The Pro-Sights are still quite easy to hit with at 25-35 yards - I haven't tried them beyond that.

As I've posted before here & elsewhere, the Ashley Express Sights aren't for ANY type of precision accuracy. I have them on an H&K USP .45 Compact. For quick acquisition of the front sight at close range, they're fine for many people, and for some folks they work better than anything else out there. For me, they don't permit the kind of speed-plus-precision that I aspire to, and I've found Richard Heinie's Straight Eight Slant Pro sights much more to my liking. It's a very individual type of preference, and you may need to actually get a set, or at least shoot a gun with these sights installed, in order to get a feel for how they will work for you. Best.

I`ve never used the Ashleys but I used to have a Ruger Redhawk with Ruger`s gold bead express sights. They were my favorite part thing about the gun(and I liked the rest of it too). With the small gold dot I was able to shoot well at extended ranges as well as being able to pick them up very fast at close range. I can see how the extremely large dot and shallower V of the Ashleys might reduce precision somewhat but again I have no actual experience with them. I`d love to have a set just like the ones on my Redhawk but with a front Tritium insert and made to fit my P-97! Marcus

I had the set up you're talking about on a Glock 19. Non tritium Ashley rear and tritium Big Dot front. I'll second what jfrancis said-

This sighting system is hard to beat for CQ defensive uses.

Well, I found all three sights mentioned above in Brownell's catalog. It seems that there are two configurations of Ashley Express sights. One being the "Big Dot" and the other being "standard".

The standard has a considerably smaller dot and their claim is that it is still fast but better for longer range accuracy. It makes sense as the smaller front sight wouldn't obscure as much target area. I might order a set of the standard tritium express sights to try out. Maybe the smaller front will make for a pretty fair compromise between speed and accuracy.

If I don't like them I can always change them back.

I've the Ashley Express Big-Dot Tritium sights on my S&W 457 that I use for work. (pre-agreement purchase) Terrific, take a little getting used to.
As far as target accuracy,I've only used them out to 25yds.They're fine within that range. They're ideal for a duty weapon,IMHO.
Bo Wallace is the gunsmith there. He did a great job and he's a very pleasant person, too.

I may get both the BD and the standard sights to play with. I mean, I have plenty of Glocks to put them on.

Considering the average range of LE/defense shootings, either should be pretty well suited for duty, as stated above. Thanks for all the replies. I'll update when I get the sights on and try them out.

I just put the regular size tritium Ashley sights on my Glock 26 which I carry off-duty and as a b/u gun. I fired a couple hundred rounds yesterday and here are my thoughts:

Very fast sight acquisition during all firing sequences and noticeably faster at close range.

I no longer need to squint my non-dominant eye during sight alignment.

Accurate double taps out to 10 yards.

The front dot covers the head (almost completely) of our standard target at 25 yards. I kept the dot centered on the head and put four shots into the right eye socket at that distance (2-1/4" group).

I will continue to use these sights on the G26 but won't put them on my duty pistol. I would not be confident making a 35-50 yard shot with the Ashleys because of the size of the front sight. I think that these sights are perfect for a close-range (up to 25 yards) CCW or backup gun.

I dont find any trouble with using these at longer ranges. I got them on one of my 1911s and consider them to be near perfect gunsights. They are going to be installed onto all my guns.
Faster than normal iron sites and just as accurate. As said - not just faster - but easier on the eyes.

CAK,

Good luck justifying a 35-50 yard handgun shot in most LE situations. I'd hesitate to take those shots with pure target sights and plenty of aiming time and no stress (which doesn't describe most LE/defense shootings) unless they had a rifle or shotgun shooting at me, OR if it was just cover fire, in which case absolute accuracy wouldn't be as important.

George,

Do you have the standard or Big Dot version on your 1911?

How about a situation like the N. Hollywood bank robbery in '97? A shot taken diagonally across an intersection would be at least 35 yards. Coupled with the appropriate backstop and suspect's actions, it would be a justifiable shooting situation. A long-range pistol headshot (absent a carbine or shotgun with slugs of course) would be the only option I would have. I feel that the Ashley dot at this range would be detrimental. No flame intended (I do like the sights on my G26) but I would like to keep my options open at greater than average engagement distances.

Ditto what George says (had to go w/ Caspian big-rod front on my 1911)!

I had the standard dot sights on my G-23. Liked 'em alot. Untill the front sight fell off. I couldn't find it. Now out of cheapness sake I'm back to the crappy plastic Glock sights.

Use red Loc-Tite. Don't use the blue.

I really wish they would make them for the Kahrs.
