Are you for tighter gun control

Honestly, the current system could work pretty well. When I go in to buy a gun, I expect to be checked against a series of national databases.

That is the issue. Many databases are not linked to the check process. You can be convicted of crimes that would bar gun ownership and get a pass because the disarmers have never done their due diligence to form and link data already being collected and stored.

What data should be in the national check??? Only data which has gone through due process concerning American citizens. Non-citizens should not have that right and it should be much more restrictive to buy guns. Now, I believe some visa statuses can buy guns.

I worry that many politically oppositional folks like pro-gunners could end up on one of these uncontrolled "watch lists." Maybe someone could clarify what due process is involved that keeps the watchlist from becoming McCarthy-ism?

I'm for tighter screening/ background checks. Not just criminal records but psych as well. Let it show if the buyer has ever been on a 5150-such hold wherein they expressed thoughts of harming themselves or others. No bargaining, just reapply four years later from the current urge to purchase a firearm and see if anything's been added to the story.

I agree whole heartedly.

But again as I said, "there is no possible way that I could ever support any such endeavor by our federal government".

As I get to occasionally explain to my friends that are pro gun control...the greatest impediment to meaningful gun control is the zeal of many gun control advocates. I would have no problem with some responsible and (what I would consider..but maybe not them) common sense controls put into place. The problem is that I have zero faith it would stop there and not be simply step 1 in a campaign for seizing everything. The recent NY Times article is a good example that the goal is not reasonable compromise for public safety, but absolute control.

Every time there is an shooting, the anti's call for more gun control, in essence penalizing lawful gun owners. An attempt to create a National data base of people with mental & drug issues, would create an uproar from the ACLU, The American Psychiatric Association, the AA and God knows who else. For once it wouldn't be the child loving anti gun crowd facing the "NRA Bully", it would be the anti gun crowd facing center and maybe left leaning groups.
For lawful gun owners this is a win-win situation. If a data base is created and used, maybe some guns could be kept out of the hand of the mentally challenged. Pass or not it would be a hoot to watch the antis take on other groups. If it doesn't pass and there is an incident involving a gun and a mentally challenged person then the antis could blame the ACLU or APA. I think this would weaken their position.
Just my point of view.

Congressman and former Black Panther, Bobby Rush, said that the end game was to take all guns out of private hands.

I am known at where I work (engineering lab) as a gun "expert" (which I am not), what has surprised me in the past couple of weeks is the number of people that I would have thought were anti gun are now asking what gun to buy.
When I ask them about gun control measures that they are trying to bring out against the American people almost all of them say that "that" is the reason they want to buy one now.

The OP is right that while imperfect, the NRA is the best organization at defending our right to keep and bear arms.

Please renew or upgrade your membership now! There are significant discounts until December 31st!

A five-million member NRA is doing a good job, but we need a ten-million member NRA. If you're not a member, swallow your pride and join.

How about when we give the government the power to abuse us and when the government does in fact abuse people (i.e. IRS action taken against conservative groups) - we revoke sovereign immunity and let the abused recover punitive damages, attorney's fees, etc. against the government AND the individuals for such abuse. Then, I might consider giving the government a tiny bit more power.
BINGO-and not a second before!

We already have the right to sue the government and it's employees for violation of civil rights, under the Tort Claims Act.

Trouble is, most folks will go bankrupt long before their suit comes to trial. Federal lawyers get paid by the year.

It's better to not give them the power to violate rights in the first place.
