If you're talking about fixed sight snubbie revolvers, then I'd say there's not much difference. If it's open class, then the revolvers I shoot are mostly from 25 yards. I can't say I've ever really practiced that far with many semis, other than a Gold Cup Match and one of the new S&W 1911's. They will certainly hang with the best, but with more $$$ (ouch!) up front.:(

It's truly apples and oranges, as was said above. I find that for slow, deliberate fire, I do better with a 4-6" barreled revolver, but when it comes to rapid fire shooting, there's no comparison at all - I'm far better and quicker with my 1911 than with any revolver, and at any range.

Overall, I'm better with revolvers as a whole. However, my two best shooting handguns are my Springfield TRP 1911 and my S&W 686 revolver equally.

I agree ........... slow deliberate fire my .44 mag with 7 1/2" barrel.
Fast fire at 15 yds, no question my PT100 .40 hands down

Depends on what I'm trying to do. If I'm trying to hit a small target at 50 yards, I might do better with a revolver, as mine have very nice, light single action triggers. If I'm trying to hit a 6" bull, six times in three seconds at ten yards, then I'll take just about any of my autos over any of my revolvers.

revolver.

mainly because I only own revolvers and frequently shoot pretty well with them.

I have fortunately gotten to shoot many semi autos (glock, beretta, sig, bersa, springfield, colt, ruger) and the "best" shooting was with the beretta and the glock) If I buy a semi auto it will probably be a Glock 19.

I am more confident and comfortable with revolvers and frequent practice helps me to choose them currently as CCW and HD choice.

I can sympathize with another poster here when I say that for slow, deliberate shooting...maybe a revolver. But, when it comes to quick follow-up shots, I just dont think the revolver suits me as well.

Since follow-up shots mean more to me, I simply prefer the semi-auto. But, honestly, I practice with semi-autos much more than I do revolvers, so Im sure this has a bit to do with it.

Deliberate fire, I have to vote either/both on this one. Just give me one and I will start putting bullets where they need to go.

There is a difference (for me) in combat-style shooting between the two. I have far more rounds through semi-autos than my DA revolvers, and it shows. I can point shoot, shoot on the move, double-tap, triple-tap and one-hand either of my Glocks much more confidently and efficiently than my revolvers.

But I have fired upwards of 10000 rounds through the Gs; I'm only at about 500-600 through my S&W .357, and a couple of bricks through my S&W M-18 .22LR. Still working with my new-to-me K-frame S&Ws to get the feel down. I think a grip-swapping will take place, as my S&W 19 has a set of Hogues that feel a bit short front-to-back and it shows when I point shoot. Even then, I am getting comfortable with the basic drills with it.

Edited: And I have switched to shooting my double-action revolvers in double-action only. Hasn't seemed to affect my 25-yard accuracy any, and only improved my speed shooting. Of course, the DA revolver work has also improved my semi-auto shooting, as my trigger finger is more decisive. ;)

Deliberate shooting - revolver (S&W 327PC)

Fast self-defense type shooting - auto (Ruger P89D)

It's funny, with the auto it seems the more I take my time the worse the groups get. Maybe I think about it too much between shots. If I shoot as fast as my finger will work I can generally cover the groups with my palm.

Comparing targets between my S&W model 15 combat masterpiece and one of the least expensive 1911's , an RIA, I'm more accurate with Mr. Brownings masterpiece. I've worked hard to get better with the revolver and the Pachmyer grip help a great deal, but the 1911 points more naturally for me and the trigger on this gun is terrific.

I agree with those who stated:

-- more accurate with a revolver for slow, aimed single-action shooting

-- more accurate with a semiauto for fast, IDPA style shooting

I chose the semi-auto. But that is only because I have more trigger time with them than any of my revolvers.

Amen Sport! I think the revolver would be more accurate with the same amount of practice. Since I do most of my pistol practice with my 92fs and a 1911 type Kimber before that, I have to go with the semi-auto as well. We went out and fired the 92 and a couple of S&W 38spl last weekend, and with a little practice, I was getting better with the revolvers. But the first 20 to 30 rounds, man did I stink. :)

It used to be a toss up for me but, lately, I've been shooting my Model 10 a lot. There's something about a K-frame that's so natural for fast shooting. It's a great pointer.

For sheer firepower, though, I have this Star MOD 30MI and it's a monster 9MM. It's big and heavy and Ramline 5900 mags give it 17+1 capacity. It lays 'em down pretty quickly & accurately. I do well with the Star, too.

The Model 10 just feels "right," kind of fluid in a way. It feels more naturally a part of me and requires much less conscious thought. With the Star, one definitely knows that one has a big, fat, serious gun in one's hand. The S&W is my night table gun.
