Are we safe at a public range

I've had bad experiences at public ranges before, but this REALLY takes the cake. I had just gotten everything set up when this group of three comes in, an older foreign man and his wife? and a younger gal. OK, I thought, isn't it nice to see women folk at the range. Boy was I ever wrong. I don't think these clowns had ever held a gun before. They dropped ammo all over the place, kept pointing the guns at everybody. They set the target about 5 yards away, would shoot as fast as they could, and NOT HIT ANYTHING. The man kept screaming something in a foriegn language until the woman slapped him. The youger gal kept yelling, I'm gonna blow your f----ng head off and striking a pose from Charlies Angels. Finally I gathered my stuff and was heading for the door when that crazy amazon pointed the gun at me and said freeze sucker.

I was horrified, I complained the the range operators and they said they would take care of it. I left and don't think I'll be going back soon. I need to find a nice quiet place in the country to shoot.

Sorry to vent, but I had to tell this to someone who would understand.

Any other BAD range experiences???

WOW!!! That's some story, glad I wasn't there.
I only shoot on one outdoor range that doesn't have much active supervision. I've learned to ALWAYS carry a handgun (hot) when walking downrange to change a target (especially on weekends when the kooks come out) If they really look like nuts I take an AR with a 30 rnd mag ;)

Damn.
I dont know what to say...

What would I have done? Reported them sooner maybe? Talked to them up front about safety? Shot them self defense? I dont know.

Education is the key. While we can't mandate an IQ - we can tell them that if they dont straighten up real fast - the next gun that gets pointed at you recieves return fire. Or "If you clowns dont stop acting the fool - I'll take you off the range - call the cops and charge you with Assault with a Deadly weapon."

That crap doesnt fly. Dont stand for it. Let the trash go someplace else and terrorize - Just say NOT AT MY RANGE.

Any active LEO input?

What the hell kind of range were you at ?

A Public one ?

I dont think so. Why didnt you or the rangemaster call the police ?

This HAS to be a troll.

The guy running the range didn't seem too concerned with the whole mess. It was at the Quality and Precison range up in Saraland,AL

Like I said I was a little shaken and more interested in leaving than anything else.

I used to think everyone should have an unrestricted right to own a gun, but after seeing these idiots, I'm not so sure.

Polymerrange, now you know why is is absolutely vital that we all keep our 2nd amendment rights.
If Gore and company had their way, you can be sure uou'd loose your rights and probably have to give up you firearms, but you can be sure that this type would keep theirs.

Poly,

I recently heard about a gal like this from a maillist. The story was that she was a young, but large gal, with several prominant tattoos, foul mouthed, and completely devoid of any Range etiquette or safety considerations.

What's it all coming to....?

My local outdoor range at Chabot, near Oakland, is rather strick. They will ban anyone that passes gas without permission. I also suspect that a number of LEO are at the range at any one time. I've seen some minor stuff, but they put a lid on it before it goes anywhere. The "put a lid on it" is not in reference to the "passing gas" comment.

The rules I follow are:

I never go to a public range alone

I never go to a public range without at least one other armed person

If I take newbies to the range, they get a full safety lecture

If someone at a public range points a weapon at me in that manner, I have someone there to draw on them, and may myself.

Such a blatent disregard for safety should be met with nothing short of absolute ruthlessness. These people are a danger to our image and our freedoms and should not be tolerated. A firearm is a VERY safe thing, but stupidity is a very dangerous factor. Most people you meet on the range will be nothing like this. If you have to file assault charges on people to keep them from doing this, then I advise you do so. They are a hazard to us all.

As to where you can shoot. What part of the country are you in?

Sorry, polymerange, but this does come off like a troll. We've seen this before, where someone new posts a bad story and then seems to 'lament' the RKBA.

If this really occurred, it is a very poorly run range. If someone tried this at Ben Avery in Phoenix, they might be arrested instead of simply being kicked off the range. The young women is lucky no one drew down on her, and forced her to relinquish her firearm.

Freedom also means that the bozos in life can create problems. We'll always have bozos. If we're not careful, we won't always have freedom.

Let's not discuss limiting the RKBA because you met three bozos in one day. Instead, complain to the range owner, and fix the problem.

Live and let live. Regards from AZ

He didn't seem concerned ?!!!!!!! If that's true, I certainly would not return to that range until I had contacted the owner(s) and gotten an explanation. BTW, I can't think of an "unrestricted right", except maybe the right to self defense, meaning the right to survive, literally. We associate that right with RKBA, but it is not synonymous.

You guys are of course right on about the right to keep and bear arms being vital. I shouldn't have even said that. But something should be done about these kind of people who reflect poorly on the gun community. I guess I am a little mad at myself for not knowing how to handle things better.

Randy Davis, I'm not sure what you mean by troll, but if you mean that I am full of BS then you are mistaken.

Thanks to the rest of you for your encouragement.

I would speak to the range owner, inform him/her about the reckless shooter and the irresponsible employee.

On an even more serious note, a man was killed by his own 9mm handgun at an Atlanta indoor range yesterday. I don't have all the details yet, I don't know if it was an accident or suicide.

I must take great offense to a few replies posted about this guys experience at the range.
What in Gods'name, makes you think that this didn't happen,as he said???
These things DO happen,But some things can't be ignored.Safety-Safety-Safety-
Range Rules-& More Safety!!!From the several instances that I have personally seen-or been involved(in 35 years),in all but 1 case, they weren't even members!!!!!!! And as such-they didn't have anything to lose when they were thrown out !!!---But my greatest, most serious incident at the range-WAS from some members that thought they owned it,and had control over everything that happened there!!!Completely ignoring ALL safety rules!!!.............
Here are a few guidlines I follow---
Always go with a friend
Take your cell phone-(not all ranges have phones,or rangemasters)
Do not leave a functionable gun in the rack,-while you are down range..Pull the bolt-or,-lock ammo & gun back in your trunk.I know of one instance where a guy had his rifle stolen when he was downrange........
I myself always carry my .44,if I am not carrying my rifle.
Watch out for yourselves and friends.....
You just don't know who is in the next car, that just pulled in !!!

This sounds like some kind of bull taken right off of the Handgun Control Website. I don't believe it.

-Inept shooters-
-Unable to hit a target 5 yards away-
-Unable to handle their guns properly-
-Dropping ammo-
-Pointing guns at people-
-Slapping each other-
-Threatening each other-
-Threatening another shooter with a gun-

I don't even know why I took the time to write this. Definitely a troll...

Unfortunately, experiences like this DO happen, no matter how much we wish they wouldn't.

Public ranges are usually uncontrolled. Ask any Colorado Springs-area shooter about Rampart and watch them turn pale.

Troll? Maybe, but I don't see it.

I keep telling my wife that I am going to buy a ballistic vest. I think she thinks it is a macho thing, but it is a range thing. The only time I have ever felt threatened by guns is while at the range. I have never had anybody do anything outright stupid as was described by polymerange, but I have been concerned about transgressions of people ignorant to proper safety.
