Are shooters "uneducated rednecks"?

brianidaho: My impression of the media is, they are the one`s with the low IQ.

I seen the comment above about being a redneck. I`m not exactly sure what a redneck is.

Is it someone that drives a pickup truck, drinks beer and smokes or chews tobacco, carries a gun? Well I may be a redneck, but an educated one. I just need to learn this damn computer. :D

Oh, and speaking of media, my music journalism has been published internationally. In fiction, I haven't been that lucky, but I am working on my second book-length manuscript. I guess when I'm dead, everyone will clamor to buy my books. Oh well.

OK, this is going to sound like its from left field but its not, or so I hope. :D

The reason that gun owners are caricatured as rednecks is that they are the most potent force in the nation to maintain the constitutional government against socialist revolution. And one common denominator among all true "liberal" organizations is that they are seeking revolution.

The list of nations which have suffered revolution is endless and the technique is always the same. From Cromwell's England to Lenin's Russia to Hitler's Germany and on to Cambodia, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Sudan we find the same pattern. The revolutionaries seek to hoist their own flag at the expense of whichever ethnic group or political group might oppose them most effectively.

Revolution does not take overnight. In America's case it has taken thirty years as the former Weathermen, SDSers, Black Panthers et cetera have matured to form the new middle aged mid career backbone of the press corps, the DNC and other "establishment liberal" organizations.

Pity the poor gun owners who are the final protection this country has against revolution. They have been singled out for a multi year elimination campaign. That in many cases they are doctors, lawyers, accountants, farmers, janitors and other "salt of the earth" types just solidifies the notion that for revolution to succeed they must be eliminated from society.

Who did they guillotine in France? Who did they gas in Germany? Who did they bury in the killing fields of Cambodia? The persons who by virtue of education, temperment or culture were most likely to try to stop the subversion of the nation.

So in answer, no gun owners are not rednecks. They are rocks in the road to socialism and that is why they are being dug out and crushed to gravel.

Guess my rifle club is a pretty good exemplar:

Handful of chalkies, service and ex-service personnel (commissioned and non-com), an MD, small business owners, sparkies, cabinet-maker, a PhD in linguistics, retirees, a supermarket manager, an e-commerce "high-roller", ex-Federal police firearms instructor, photocopier technician, dental prosthetist, auto mechanic, courier drivers, antique furniture restorer, wharfie (longshoreman??) -- all just ordinary, everyday people with mortgages and families and the same worries and concerns anyone else.

We just happen to like guns and shooting.

Redneck? I dunno. Someone else will have to make that call....

I am curently an Senior engeering student. Hope to be successfull someday. I did grow up on a farm if that makes me a redneck. It is nice to shoot in the back yard though. :)

Redneck is a term that has been misused and abused to the point to the point that it no longer is an honorable word. Most people who use the word have no idea what it means, only what it connotes.
I think it is time to chastise and demonize the redneckophobes on this forum.

You know who you are!!

Hmmm...I live in a little bitty town in Wyoming, home of the redneck. Yeppers, lots of rednecks around here. We all have 3/4 ton 4X4 pickumup trucks and we kill lots of critters and drink beer and I don't mean lite beer folks. Some of us guys even have NRA decals on the windshield. Heck, I went out this afternoon and shot my Baer and afterwards I shot a round of trap.

The guys on my squad all left with a red neck, it was hotter than hell and everyone got sunburned around the collar. One guy was a Game Warden, I think he has a college degree or two or three. Another guy is a construction supervisor, he has a Master's Degree in Education. Another is an investigator for the county Sheriff's Office and his dad is a retired government trapper. I are a school teacher. I teach computer stuff like CISCO Internetworking. I have three of them degrees and I am working on another Master's Degree rat now. Yep, we be rednecks and we tote guns, but we sure as hell ain't uneducated.

Now ain't that a scary thought, well educated rednecks with voter registration cards.

Uneducated rednecks? My brother is a shooter. He's also a Federal attorney with a JD from a first-tier U.S. law school and an LLM from the London School of Economics. Another brother, also a shooter, has a BArch degree and is a licensed professional architect. A shooting buddy of mine is a Phi Beta Kappa with three college degrees. Each of these guys probably has about five times the education of the average anti-gun crackpot, and knows a lot better how to apply it.

BA and Masters 35 years ago - now in web stuff.

Studies of gun owners indicate higher than average education. Kleck has this, IIRC.

Go to a trap range and you'll see the whole gamut of society out there; and this will be reflected in the mass marketed pump action shotgun to hand crafted Perazzis found there. Go to the rifle range and you'll see anything from the humble NEF single shot to exotic 50 caliber rifles. We shooters are representative of society from doctors, lawyers, cops, executives, bakers, soldiers farmers, factory workers, retirees, mechanics, janitors, students, clerks, cashiers and anything else that ever walked on two feet or driven a car.

Our hobby is one which may be embraced by anyone and no special physical prowess is required. You don't have to be fast. You don't have to be tall. You don't have to be young. You don't need a degree and letters after your name. You don't even have to be able to walk.

We should never forget that the entire spectrum of American society enjoys this sport. No, we are not a bunch of "uneducated rednecks." The media would have us believe it and in doing so, discredit us and our sport. We can fight these distortions with the truth. Bring a non-shooter to the range and make a believer out of them. Like other TFLers, I have and it works.

Thanks for the replys, just confirmed my impressions. I didn't happen to notice any posts from journalists or TV personalities here :) FWIW, I do drive a pick-up (Chevy, not one of those sissy Japanese jobs :) )(gunracks only in the window during hunting season), and ride a bike (Kawasaki Concours, so much for my last comment). BTW Dennis, nice 'Wing. Also NRA life member.

It's always interesting that, in spite of all the ranting and raving the media and some politicians do about gun control, the last ones they want to talk to are responsible gun owners. I don't believe I have ever seen a news article or interview at a local range. I don't think they'd risk upsetting the sterotypes they have gone to so much trouble to prepare.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with the use of the term "redneck". I know I've heard the story of where the term came from, but can't recall it. Anyone know?

I own and live on the farm I grew up on. I drive a 10 yr old RAM 250 Dodge pickup. I grow and sell 2 orchard crops and various summer crops. I own and run 2 tractors (John Deere's). My town consists of a Gen'l Store, a Post Office(own zip code), a Church (Prot.), an elementary school and 2 saloons...approx pop of 1100. I've butchered pigs, steers and most else edible critters. BBQ is a food group, I hunt and fish and I eat lots of meat, Mexican, Italian and Central Calif BBQ....and Chinese, Japanese and Indian. I have cowboy boots, and big ol' silver belt buckle, lots of hats, and I primarily wear jeans and hiking boots. My exposed flesh is brown and my neck is reddish/brown. I like and enjoy cattle. I have a hobby project...I'm restoring a 54 Ford pickup; have a Hawkin kit in the box waiting for me. I know an authentic Amerind Chumash tribal chief. I know leathered grizzled old men who have no education and are some of the wisest and intelligent people the human gene pool can produce. I absolutely love where I live.
I'm also a 2nd generation American via Sicilian immigrants.
Oh yeah, I'm a 33 yr old single mom, BA Biology (History minor), MS Molecular Biology, PhD Biochemistry and a college instructor. I can sustain a 10 min conversation on Classical Art, but I adore black velvet Meskin paintings. I've vacationed and professionally gone to various regions of Europe and Singapore. I'm reasonably conversant in 3 languages.

Ah'ss a redneck, you betcha I'm proud of it. :)

I can't resist:

What's the difference between a red neck and a good 'ol boy?

A good 'ol boy raise live stock a red neck gets emotionally involved. 8)

Me? BA Communications, BFA Photography, MFA Visual Arts Photography, MA Education Administration, 100 hours post-grad work in law and public administration, Support Services Manager at a local College. Speak three languages(can't write them worth a damn) Published author, art work in major galleries in the US.

Does anyone from HCI wanna swap credentials with me?

My neck should be fire engine red. I don't own a gun, I own the whole darn arsenal!

Nothing gets me more fired up then when a group of people stereotypes another for their own political gain. This is exactly what the antis, HCI (Hopeless Commie Idiots), the Clinton-Gore Administration and the rest of the rats nest has done to decent Americans who properly and lawfully use firearms. Paint gun owners as unsympathetic characters so the people on the fence don't care.

Gotta go, I'm working myself up, again.

What was that song Don Henley sang a few back?
"Give me Dirty Laundry"?

A drum roll pleez:

I make my living off the evening news,
Just give me something that I can use.
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry.

Well I could have been an actor,
But I wound up here.
I just have to look good,
I don't have to be clear.
Come and whisper in my ear,
We need dirty laundry.

Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em all around.

We got the bubble-headed bleach blonde,
Comes on at five,
She can tell ya 'bout the plane crash,
With a gleam in her eye.
It's int'resting when people die,
Give us dirty laundry.

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
Y'know the boys in the newsroom,
Got a running bet.
Get the widow on the set,
We need dirty laundry.

You don't really need to find out
What's going on,
You don't want to know just
How far it's gone,
Just leave well enough alone,
Keep your dirty laundry.

Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em where they sit,
Kick 'em all around.

Dirty little secrets,
Dirty little lies,
We got our dirty little fingers
In ev'rybody's pies,
We love to cut you down to size,
We love dirty laundry.

We can do the innuendo,
We can dance and sing.
When it's said and done we haven't
Told you a thing.
We all know that crap is king,
Give us dirty laundry.

Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em when they're down.
Kick 'em when they're up,
Kick 'em all around.

The point of this is to remember for us, what we're dealing with.
It won't change without being seen, and heard as a solid, coherent, VIABLE force to be reckoned with.

Nukem nailed it. The long term object is to demonize gun owners, just as Hitler and Goebbels demonized the Jews in Germany. Demonize until the populace come to think of the "demons" as "dirty, filthy vermin." What do you do with vermin?? Why, that's simple. You exterminate them.

The media have long been controlled by and populated with Marxist Socialists. (In reality, practically speaking, Marxist Socialists are nothing more than a compliation of Nazis, Communists and Fascists.) Their many years efforts have been to systematcially demonize us gun owners, and brainwash the populace to beieve we are "dirty, filthy vermin", or in their vernacular, "rednecks."

Someday, when the time is ripe, they intend to exterminate the vermin, in order to bring about their Brave New Marxist Socialist Police State Utopian World.

That's what it's all about, boys and girls.

The proper answer to the question would be: "Shooters are not, but hunters are another story."

DC; You aint that smart. You misspelled Mexican.

Yeah, I'm a Redneck!
