Are shooters "uneducated rednecks"? Part Deux

It occurs to me that some of the stupidest (meaning, unable to independently cogitate) people are the most highly "educated." Living in an ivory tower tends to limit one's experience and perspective.

Or, to put it in my normal vocabulary: Eat my shorts, you sanctimonious anti-gun freaks! :D

I would characterize myself as well educated, and yet incompletely educated.
There are still some things that I just don't understand, like what the heck REALLY motivates a Liberal Democrat...

I have been a rocket scientist, a materials scientist, and a developer of new hi tech gizmos (one of them won the "Design News Magazine" design of the year award) for over twenty five years. Nevertheless, I really hate computers.
I currently do some gunsmithing and make a few knives.

I am also, unabashedly, a chronic redneck.

I prefer to believe that, when necessary, I can speak or write with exquisite erudition.

Or, barring that, a modicum of clarity. :)

As for "redneck?" Well then there now...

Work attire - Jeans, collared shirt (with buttons, no less! Took awhile, but I finally figured them out and ditched the velcro...), hiking boots and a nifty little Ken Onion designed knife clipped into the change pocket of said jeans.

Home attire - Same, but with T-shirt. Maybe shorts. Lose the hiking boots. Bare feet whenever practical.

Wife - Southern gal and military brat. Likes to wear my shirts. Ditto the bare feet thing. Her .44 magnum is her favorite handgun. Former Technical Director for a huge west coast telecommunications company. Retired when the BS got too thick to stomach and now does volunteer work.

Uneducated? Yah... prolly... just a BA and a BS between us.

Are we "rednecks?" Guess it would depend upon who you ask. ;)

I was thankin about this here question while I went a giggin frogs last night
and said self "what is a redneck anyways?' Dangit I could not figure it out but I sure gigged me alot of frogs though! Hell yea, they'll have to pry my dead cold hands from my gigger before I give up them frogs!!

He, now, y'all...I was born in Okie-homa, raised in a hick town in Californie (they used to print tee shirts that said, "Where the hell is Saugus (then, on the back ) right next to Newhall!"...OK, well, ya had to be there!)

My daddy taught me to fish...caught my first fish (by myself) when I was four years old.

But....I also have a BA in Earth Science and a certificate in "Network Systems and Adminstration." (heehee...when I wuz in that thar colidje in Los An-jeleez, I went on a field trip in the high desert...caught me a lizard and shocked all them city boys..."Hey! How'd you do that?" "My daddy taught me how to catch, paralyze and SKIN lizzzzerds!" m e- :D them - )
So, now I am a Technical Analyst in a computer lab during the week, and a target destroying gun nut on the weekend, when I'm lucky!
A cool thing about my new job...there are LOTS of shot-up targets hanging outside cubes in my group. Very cool! :)
A funny thing about my job....I just set up several thousand dollars worth of brand new equipment last week. But, there isn't room in our budget for floppy disks or mouse pads! We have to format old driver disks that we scrounge up and it's BYOMP (bring your own mouse pad) in the lab!!!!

After reading all these posts, it seems that I'm the most uneducated person on this board.

Sad.

When Reason Fails.....

OK so I hail "FROM" West Virginia. I can properly distinguish Ya'll (singlular) from All Ya'll (multiple). I can take a canoe trip in WVa. and not fear the hillbillies on the river. I know what a blue tick and redbone and a black and tan are. I have consumed a LOT of RC Cola.

I'm also the art director for a national magazine about art and lifestyles. I have a BFA in drawing from the University of Colorado with distinction, and am working on a masters in multi media at the University of Denver. I also learned to speak Russian and know way too much about anti submarine warfare for never having served in the navy. And I rock at Jeopardy and Scrabble.

Does that make me NOT a redneck?

I don't watch nascar (world superbike and grand prix are my faves) nor do I live in a trailer. But my relatives are still there in places like Pigeon Creek and Clendennin and "South" Charleston. I own a lot of guns and I love to hunt and fish and hike and ride horses and dig holes and sleep under the stars and catch snakes and frogs and am still driven by the urge to "build forts" in the woods.

You can take a boy out of the country.... can you really take the country out of the boy?

Just a thought.

BTW the Term "red neck" was a term used by company detectives to describe union organizers in the West Virginia coal fields.. it used describe the red bandannas worn by miners on strike and in the active "west virginia mine war" of the early 20's. Calling someone a RED NECK was the equivalent of calling them a COMMUNIST at one time. Times sure have changed. (source: Thunder in the Mountains, the west virginia mine wars)

Ok, I evaded the question in Part 1 so I'll fess up:

BA, MA & Doctorate (over 300 college units altogether) plus a 2" binder filled with training certificates.

Just finished my BS in Accounting from Utah State University. Right now I work for the University but I'm looking for a job in LE. Go figure.

I have the opportunity to work with lots of professors. Let me just say that going to college for ten years does not mean that you are smart. :D

For example, anybody remember my coyote shooting story with the Landscape Architecture professor? ;)

Best rednecks come from tha South!

Most shooters I know are far from rednecks. Almost all are thoughtful, thought-provoking people, regardless of their respective education levels. Some have degrees on the wall, some have more life experience than any degree could ever give. Do I agree with all of them on any topic , including gun issues? NO, but then I am a big boy and don't expect them to either.
Of course, none of those people will ever make it onto any mainstream news media. They'll find some freak I swear must be computer generated, non-living caricature to carry on the myth of the slob gun owner.

I have just come across TFL recently and have been reading and learning. I have to say ya'lls are too funny. :D

As for my background, I have BA in Psychology. I have been a research scientist in pharmaceuticals for eight years and am currently a clinical data analyst. I lived all my life in NJ for the most part and I am now living in TX. I got tired of fighting the BS in NJ!!! Now I carry!

I am a wannabee redneck if it means having guns, hunting, fishing, having a pickup, being friendly, etc....!!!!

BA: Russian and Economics
Languages:English(of course),Russian, Serbo Croatian, German, FoxPro, and a bit of SQL.

I grew up on a farm, drive a pickup, love bass fishing, and paid my way through college on the GI Bill.

Music tastes run from Garth Brooks to Beethoven.
Am I a Redneck? Who cares?

Yes, I'm a redneck.

Grew up in small Pennsylvania town. Parents own pickup truck. Father owns shotgun. Father (now retired) works on our blueberry farm.

As for uneducated, well, make your own call there. :)
