If the zombies/hippies/aliens/chinese/mexicans come, you really shouldn't be using more than about 50 rounds of pistol ammo in your quest to get a rifle or shotgun into your hands ASAP.
50 rounds of handgun ammo is a LOT of social shooting. Most self defense social encounters involve less than 10 rounds between both sides of the attack.
If you get past a second magazine in a shooting situation, you're probably deep into the muck and involved in a localized breakdown of social services (riot, hurricane, etc) or a full blown SHTF/TEOTWAWKI/WTFBBQLOL situation. Having a long gun in that situation is not only acceptable... it's just plain out survival wisdom.
For me... with hollowpoint retail ammo as expensive as it is, I only carry the first magazine filled with premium hollowpoints. Any second magazine gets FMJ.
Also, anything under 9mm/38special in power should just be FMJ anyways. Not enough speed and mass to be an effectively penetrating hollowpoint expander anyways. .380, 9x18, .32, .25, .22... all those.
