Are glocks really this good?

355sigfan,

Come on, we both know that velocity varies widely enough (depending on the cartridge manufacturer and type of ammo) as to not be a serious arguement. Barrel length also affects the velocity. Stating that the GLOCK hits harder than ANY OTHER handgun out there is pure BS. You know it and I know it.

Besides, there are other several other handguns on the market with polygonal rifling (Kahr, H&K to name a couple). Is it really true that the GLOCK hits harder than an H&K with an identical barrel length? I really, really don't think so.

The 'Glock hits harder' BS, is of course, BS. The round is the round is the round; and if you spit it out of a lead pipe by hitting it with a hammer, if the velocity is matched to the Glock, they will both hit equally as hard.

Chris, I see where you're coming from, but you have to agree (?) that some of your self-styled 'eccentric' opinions are, at best, arguable. When you come onto a firearms BBS and say that .38 Special is a more proven round than .45ACP simply because it's been in service for a few more years, you should be prepared to have to defend your position. Likewise, the position that the Makarov is every bit the combat firearm that the Glock is...or that 6 rounds is all that anyone will ever need. These things may very well be your firm opinion, but when you throw them out into this venue, look out! :)

Glock may not be the best or most accurate pistols that you can get, but you have to admit they have one heck of a track record for reliability. They are one of the simplest to operate too! Yes, Glock is a utilitarian pistol, a very good one.

What I do know is given equal barrel length poligonal rifling will give more velocity than conventional lands and groves. This is fact. Glock and HK both use this rifling system and they hit a touch harder than those that don't if the barrel lengths are the same.

Glock Reliability

Meat:

I guess there's one thing about your post that I have trouble agreeing with - you say Taylor has fired 100,000 rounds thru his Glock.

NOT SO !!!! He has currently fired over 170,000 rounds thru that particular Glock with zero malfunctions (other than two mag springs). The latest article is in the current issue of Combat Handguns.

The latest extension of the test includes (in addition to immersion in salt water) dropping the pistol and loaded mag into cow manure and firing WITHOUT cleaning (to simulate combat conditions).

So you tell me - are Glocks really that good ??

They work and work well and are as accurate as most other pistols in their price range and are probably more reliabile and durable than many pistols that cost alot more.

Aren't we all happy that we have so many different "flavors" to choose from when it comes to picking a handgun? I know I am! :D

I don't know how many rounds my Dad has thru his G19 but he's owned his since 86 and has used it for his Primary and backup gun while on duty w/ the S.F.P.D. , now it's his off duty weapon. I asked him if he ever had any problems and he told me "nope, none at all", but he did tell me that it did get all of it's springs and frame changed in 92.

I'd still venture to say that he's put well over 20k rounds...

I agree with Bob locke. It's certainly nice to have so many good solid choices to chose from. When Glock's first came out they were considered hot stuff. Nowadays, with the market so competitive, Glock's are simply good pistols among many good pistols.
I've had three Glock's. Two were unacceptable. If you've had good luck with the Glock line then good for you. With so many fine pistols out there I personally don't need another Glock. Best Regards, J. Parker

I hear (of course) Glocks are top notch, but I hear the HS2000 is right up with the famed Glocks. Infact, I plan on buying an HS2000 very soon.

Oh yeah, well then I'll take a Davis Arms .25 over a Glock 19 any day!!! In this country, .25's have killed more people than your .45's, 9mm's, and .38's combined!!! And if it DOES malfunction, then I'll THROW the ugly piece of crap at ya! :D

Seriously, if a Glock feels like magic in your hands, buy it... if you find that the Sig makes your toes curl, it does NOT mean that you're automatically gonna die in a firefight. Glocks work. HK's work. Sig's work. HS2000's work (so I hear). Walthers... well, you get the picture.... And oh yeah, they can ALL break too. :)

Peace!
