AR15 pistol 7.5in. barrel PDW-best of everything?

"I used to think these things were silly... After reading some of the posts by AR pistol enthusiasts, I decided to build one in the 10.5 inch variety; while all along doubting it's usefulness, or even being able to shoot it accurately.

I have to say that it is the most fun firearm that I own. It's surprisingly easy to shoot. You can still get a good cheek weld on the tube and shoot it almost as well as a carbine standing unsupported.

I'm not going to go into ballistics, because of the obvious limitations. If someone thinks they are 500 yard guns... Well hmmm .

I thought this more of a plug for HD firearms myself"

+1

Firearms are tools in a tool chest. Some of them are pretty specialized. That does not make them worthless in the broader perspective. It makes them special purpose tools.

Consider this scenario, or one similar to it:

Some guys on this site - no, I don't know precisely how many - enjoy long-distance touring on motorcycles. We don't stop in motels/hotels every night, because it gets expensive, but a hot shower every other day or two is nice. Do it long enough and you realize the road can get weird. On two different occasions I've had drunks try to kick their way into my motel room. The last guy thought I was in there with his wife. Ever try to reason with a drunk??

An AR pistol with a quick-detach foregrip and 10.3" bbl fits nicely into my Harley Road King saddlebags. In a motel room it snaps together in seconds. I can turn the red dot on before hitting the sack, and it's still going strong the next morning. Anyone kicking through the door in the middle of the night is going to suddenly remember they have somewhere else to be when 30 rounds of 5.56mm start coming their way from the distance of the length of a motel room.

Is it the most awesome dragon-slayer imaginable? No, probably not. But in terms of a de facto SBR that fits into my Harley saddlebags it works pretty well. It will work at least as well as any handgun, and likely better - certainly with more rounds available (as there may be more than one of them).

Definitely, in my opinion, the AR pistol I pack when long-range touring on the bike is more than a range toy. Whether something is useful or not depends a lot on your particular circumstances and potential scenarios.

Just MHO.

YMMV.

Obviously, you haven't thought this statement through!
In a few words, collateral damage?
Maybe too much long distance riding on your scooter?

Possibly, but most of the motel rooms I've stayed at had nothing outside the front doors but parking lots. (Maybe you stay at higher quality motels!) Moreover, the same critique could be made for any firearm - there are 9mm with impressive velocities as well.

By all means, pick your own poison. The fact is that there are niche uses for a great many firearms that may not be broadly useful, even if that niche may be narrow.

If you're deaf and nothing important is behind the threat they'd be a great choice over a long gun for home defense. But in the real world I consider AR and AK pistols just range toys. I really want to try deer hunting with mine but I get to deer hunt so little I don't want to chance it so I'm sticking with a rifle. Plus I don't want to go deaf shooting it without muffs. Maybe one day I'll try it.

I don't like the 7.5" barrel in .223 personal. I have an 8" 300BLK and a 5" 9mm. Both of those calibers get to take advantage of purpose built bullets for the speed in which the short barrel gives it. lots of .300BLK bullets specifically made to be optimal in the 200FPS range. I don't know of any ,223 that wouldn't just become an fmj with a 7" bbl, excluding fragmenting. 10.5" seems reasonable.

I think AR pistols have a fantastic role in home defense, or even hotel/motel defense. people that think ar's overpenetrate anymore than pistols need to do more research, although at the slower speed I am not sure how they all behave, but either way a miss is going to keep going until it hits something. whether it be a 9mm or 300winmag, all of them are deadly if shot at a passer-by, and all of them penetrate multiple layers of wood and dry-wall(pistols penetrating more). that is a silly argument against rifle cartridges for defense.

obviously, the "best of everything" is totally wrong. simply because I cannot fit any of my ar-pistols in my pocket and go to Kroger.

More like worst of everything performancewise. May get some tacticool points, but I'd much rather have a 9mm with that barrel length and for that purpose...

The yaw and fragmentation terminal effects of .223 don't apply at 2200 ft/s. At that point, it's just another .22. Personally I can't imagine an application for which I'd select such a weapon.

The .300 BLK loaded with say Nosler balistic tips would at least have a viable wounding mechanism in excess of caliber, since those will expand to .50 or so.
