Not at all. I think it's a great idea. When I opened this thread I though you wanted to let your 2 year old shoot the AR, which I'd have an issue with (then again, it's your kid, not mine). But as to what you described, provided you can afford it, I think it's a great idea.

No reason not to do it, planning ahead is a good thing.
I bought a Henry 22 mag the day after my grandson was born with the intention of giving it to him when I think he is responsible enough to use it safely,,,, he's only 6 right now so it ain't time yet buddy,,,
