AR question - .223 or .308?

I have been shooting a dpms with a 24 in heavy duty barrel, jewel trigger, bennie cooley comp, and a zeiss varmint rapid z scope 6.5 x 20.the rifle is a tac driver at one hundred yards.i have shot 1.5 in groups at three hundred yards and three in groups at 500 yards.i am so impressed with this ar platform, i dont think i will ever buy a bolt action rifle again. Forgot to mention 223cal.hope this helps in your decision.

I guess either AR would suit you since you obviously dont know anything about Mini's. My vote would be the .308 that way when you shoot it no one can hear you run your mouth.

Living in the Bahamas does come with a cost, $50 a box ammo!!!!

You said weight is not a factor and .308 is a more obtainable ammo. I would look at a 16" or 18" .308 platform AR. The ArmaLite AR10 is a very good rifle and it does have a life time warranty. In a 16" carbine and ten round mags it's not to heavy to be used for hunting. It would make short work of those hogs.

what makes you say this? I never said I don't like my mini, I love it, I just find that trying to make it accurate is similar to whipping oneself; its painful and frustrating. I am getting a new barrel, gasblock, stock, and new glass. I am basically doing a complete rebuild, I am also going to duracoat it. at the moment the US government is pretty much no longer exporting any tactical firearms to the bahamas so I am going to hold off on the ar until then. I have decided to go with the .308 as I have a .223 already so I really dont need another one. might as well try something different; I just wish that they had standardized components on the ar10's they are all different!!!

Go with the SR-25/M110 pattern rifles for maximum parts compatibility--i.e. Bushmaster, DPMS, KAC, Larue, Mega, etc. Most of the aftermarket support such as .308 PMAGs and Charging Handles are built for the SR-25 pattern gun.

@chack
A .223 AR will hit out to 500 M consistently, the issue is that by the time it gets out there it may not have enough energy left to do much more than make a hole in paper.
That's crazy talk. I have a piece of 5/8 regular mild steel that looks like a bright orange Swiss cheese that says otherwise.

For me the .308 is what you need since you mentioned hog hunting.

I don't really see how you can get anything in an AR platform if they aren't importing anything tactical.

En contraire!

#1, there is no standard for the .308 platform AR's.;)

#2, these rifles use three different style mags, FAL, M14 and SR25.

#3, you well find different rifles use different bolt catches and mag releases, the rest of the LPK parts, the RE's are the same. Hand guard fit is determined by the barrel nut and most all manufacturers of hand guards are offering barrel nuts for the different platforms. Exception here is DPMS and the weird rail height they have changed two or three times over the years.

Pmags fit a small portion of the .308 rifles out there. The higher mag spring pressures for 7.62 ammo may cause problems with the feeding lips of plastic mags spreading apart after a period of time. A few shooters have reported issues with the early .308 plastic magazines.

The custom charging handles fit across the different platforms with the exception of RRA, PRI offers a separate one for RRA.:)

Yes, there's no standard, but:

The Brits adopted the LMT MWS (takes the .308 PMAG) and the US uses the KAC M110 (takes the .308 PMAG). It would make sense that most of the aftermarket support would follow what's currently being produced in large numbers to fulfill government/military contracts.

Yes, you're right in that there's a metric ass-ton of different AR-10 pattern .308 rifles out there. After purchasing my LAR-8 and dealing with all sorts of charging handle, stock, and magazine compatibility issues, I should have just gone with a SR-25 pattern rifle. For example, I use the BCM Gunfighter charging handles on my AR15s, and was disappointed that they did not make one for my LAR-8. Indeed, the only enhanced charging handle for the LAR-8 is the PRI Big-Latch, which besides being expensive, has a reputation for breaking the roll-pin. Thus, I purchased the latch handle only and added that on to my LAR-8's stock CH...

I'm just trying to pass on lessons that I've learned. YMMV.

And the Canadian military adapted the ArmaLite with it's M14 style mags.

The only after market support I see are the Pmags. The rest are oem's or surplus.

I agree there are more manufacturers making the SR-25 pattern rifle and well probably become the De facto standard. I think the low cost DPMS rifles are a driving force behind this.

I have a ArmaLite and a Noveske and may cross platforms and get a LMT MWS, they are very nice. I have yet to handle anything that comes close to the Noveske.

You can't own them all, but you can own them all once.

I still say the 6.5 Grendel fits the bill for long range ballistics, superior accuracy and a 130 grain bullet with enough kinetic energy to drop any hog in it's tracks. Handloading is a must though- why not consider handloading due to your limited commercial ammo availability?

I can almost guarantee you will shoot and enjoy a .223 (cheap ammo, light recoil, light rifle) more often, than if you bought the .308 (more expensive ammo, more recoil, heavier rifle).

As always, I could be wrong :D

6.8 SPC is also a good choice, though out in the fare ranges the 6.5 carries better.

6.8 would be good for hogs.

Both run on standard AR platform.
