Ar-15

thanks. that was some great info! i wouldn't be shooting as much as you describe, although its like you say...i might change my mind once I have something like that in hand ;) I was thinking more along the lines of the once or twice a month of shooting that I would do with that gun to empty one or two mags in bursts. but then, that probably wouldn't warrent paying the high $$ for the gun in the first place. i plan on starting out with a $700-1500 AR with the intentions of leaving my options open for upgrade in the future. All in all, I understand it that for a threaded barrel the gun would have to be pre-ban. A supressor will run some $$ and require the usual tax.

The only thing that I still have a question about is the conversion of an AR to auto if I desire. I noticed that their are some books on this sorta stuff and was thinking that they are probably garbage. I've heard of replacement parts to do the job as well. Of course all laws applicable and perhaps a tax??? hmmm
Does anybody know anything about this?

Thanks all.

Honestly, I have a hard enough time keeping the 3 and soon 4th AR's I have in ammo. Then there is the M1A and the Savage 110Fp both in .308.

However I would not have this problem if I didn't see something else I need every time I go pick up ammo.
That is why i noe have a Pre Ban BM A2 on layaway, I went to buy ammo and pick up the Savage.

Semi Auto should be able to keep you just as happy and for a lot longer and it a faction of the costs.

Conversions

Exile, you cannot LEGALLY convert ANY semi auto to full auto, unless the weapon was made prior and up to '86, if memory serves correctly.( and you cannot do this yourself).

So you can forget about that altogether.

The ONLY exception to this, is if it is being done for a governmental agency, or for develoment of a new design....and then there is TONS of paperwork involved, all has to passed through the ATF.

So, since your questions are now moot, you are stuck with dropping around $6-8K, for a pre '86 FA.

IF you want one.

And yes, you are correct, the "Books", you refered to are junk, and are designed to be of "Only", informational use.

Because trying any of the "Mod's", described therein, will get you a trip to the Federal hoosegow.........steer well clear of this garbage....it spells only T_R_O_U_B_L_E.

Since it is IMPOSSIBLE to have the above made legal.

Now, does that answer your questions??.:)

Hope so..........

yeah, thanks. i must have thought that you could convert and pay some tax on the item that was needed to do it and was one of those "items". NFA rules applicable....

thanks

No disrespect intended....

But, this is an area you best NOT think about......get advice from a Reputable, well known, Class 3 dealer, and do NOT take anything for granted in this area............the stakes are WAY to high.

Tshoes pretty much nailed it...

You just happened to ask some "newbie-like" questions about full-auto conversions. I suggest reading some of the NFA laws. While you may have been around guns for the past 4-5 years, it doesn't seem like you've kept up with the laws. I'm glad you posted here, instead of getting caught trying to buy and auto-sear through the mail, and having ATF ring your doorbell. You don't even have to have the auto sear installed in your post-ban for you to get into trouble.

We don't like seeing fellow member getting in trouble.

That said, I like Bushmaster, but you may want to check out the LGEP AR at AR-15.com. And to answer your original question, I think $895 is a little high for a 16" Bushy...

Exile,
As for buying off the new...I have never had a problem. I shop a lot of the for sale boards at a number of places and have not once been hurt.
I have bought a pristine Winchester Model 70 .308 Varmint, 2 SKS rifles, a Dissapator upper, 35 plus mags, scope and complete mounts setups, Savage 110FP in .308, 37mm launcher for an AR, SA M1a NIB and a countless number of rounds.....I would trust the guys on these boards before a few commercial companies out there.
I don't think you will find many Members Senior Members, Veteran or Moderators wanting someone posting complaints.

I trust them enough to ask question, if they are selling something treat it accordingly.

Just my opinion and one I feel strongly on
:)

Legal means of making a semi-auto AR15 into full auto(for civilian ownership/use) would be limited to using either a registered NFA "lightning link" or a registered NFA "DIAS"(drop in auto sear). It's possible to get these still and do it legally, lightning links go for around 1800-2400 if I remember correct but they only permit full-auto fire when installed. Drop in auto sears can get really expensive, 3200-4000 if I remember correct, and inorder to work properly all the correct M16 full auto fire control parts must be used as well. The requirements one must go through for a lightning link or a DIAS are the same as for a machine gun, basically the two devices ARE considered the machine gun and are the actual registered pieces. There are other concerns about trying to do this as well if you want to stay completely legal, that's the area I can't get into really but some of the full auto crowd could more than verse you in this area if you were to kindly ask them. Legally registered lighting links and DIAS will also be pre-86 registered devices which makes them still transferrable.

If you went this route I would have to say GO preban, it's worth it more in the end where if you change out your NFA parts that way you won't have to take off things like collapsable stocks or flash suppressors. Again, talking to the full auto crowd who has been there and done this will be able to help you further. If not this forum, then the AR15.com forum in the "full auto" forum, the topic might be covered already over on AR15.com if you were to go look.

As for the Drop In Auto Sears, I hear Bushmaster is the only one out there who has their lowers milled out correctly to take a DIAS without having to modify the lower any further. Most manufacturers leave the "shelf" and the area around the safety/selector unmilled or slightly out of spec so that installing a DIAS is a bit more difficult. If you've ever seen a "sear block" Colt AR15 you'd know precisely what I'm talking about, not only does it eliminate the potential use of a DIAS but it also destroys all hope of using a Lightning Link as well.
