there is no gun more "fun" than the "ak family". all you have to do is clean both of them to tip the scales.
i really like my armalite m15, but just for "banging around" it seems it's just gonna be a ak. if you are looking for recoil at the ar level, you can get a ak-74 clone (i have the sar-2). the 5.45 is the eastern block version of the 5.56x45mm built on the 39mm case from the 7.62x39 (saves on machinery)
5.45 ammo is now down to 7.62 levels and the mags are extremely affordable, light and tough (bakelite). its recoil is light and IMO more accurate than it's larger brother. whats really is the kobra red-dot made for the 74 for <$150
