George is right. I have a VEPR II and a Bushy, and the two are both great weapons. The VEPR II is arguably THE best AK on the market. It is extremely accurate and very ergonomic. The downsides are its weight, which will be a full two lbs more than the M4, and the recoil, which is more noticeable than the .223. Upside: ammo is much cheaper for the AK, mags are cheaper, easy to clean. My vote: get an AK now, since they are imports and may not be around for too much longer, then save up and buy a M4 a couple years down the line.

Get a FAL.
The current kit guns being made by DSarms are pretty sweet, but for more money, you can get their all-American SA-58.
After some initial hiccups, I have my SA-58 carbine purring like a kitten.
PLUS SIDE:
Hi caps are six bucks
Gun field strips in seconds
Rugged and proven design
Battle tested by damn near every non-commie nation
A real battle rifle caliber in .308 Winchester.
Battlefield accurate
MINUS SIDE:
Ergonomics are still a bit lacking
You can carry less ammo than .223
If braked, they can be LOUD.
Not a tackdriver
The FAL met all my requirements, so it was the right choice for me. YMMV of course!

I think that every American gun owner should have an AR. That said, I've grown very appreciative of the .308 round over the last few years (primarily through more hunting activity with it). Solution: AR10. There are few rifles I own that I have been as happy with as my AR10-A4 (and one of them is my Colt pre-ban .223).
Back to your choices:
I'd hate to see you buy any rifle in order to save 10 bucks on a magazine! AR 30 rnd mags are still relatively cheap and plentiful and if you are scraping pennies to buy mags how are you going to justify the increased cost of ammo for the .308?!?

I have a Colt AR and an Imbel FAL. I like them both but if this is just going to be a range gun for you, I would say go for the AR simply because its easier on you if you are shooting several hundred rounds in one day at the range. I do prefer the Fal as a combat weapon because I prefer a .308 bullet in alot of circumstances over the .223.
Either oen should work for you whatever you decide in the end I think its often personal preferance.
