Gore: Ban Guns in Churches
By LAURA MECKLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pushing a popular election-year issue, Vice President Al Gore wants to ban guns from churches and other places of worship.

In a speech later today in California, Gore plans to announce support for legislation banning firearms in churches, synagogues and mosques, as well as where school events are held.

Gore, the presumptive Democratic nominee, will also note that Texas Gov. George W. Bush, his GOP presidential rival, signed a law in 1995 that allows Texans to carry concealed weapons with a permit.

While that law banned guns from churches and synagogues, in 1997 Bush signed another law that forces houses of worship to post signs or hand out cards alerting visitors that guns are not permitted. The law barred prosecution of those who bring guns into churches unless they had been notified of the rules first.

''I believe we need to seize upon the growing consensus that it is time to get guns away from those who should not have them,'' Gore said in prepared remarks. He said he has always believed in the right of hunters to carry weapons. ''But America cannot afford another Columbine, or another Paducah, or another Jonesboro.''

Shootings at schools in those communities have galvanized support for gun control measures in Congress and among Americans.

A spokesman for Bush was not immediately available for comment.

Gore planned to discuss his initiative this afternoon at a speech at the Washington United Youth Center in San Jose, Calif.

Also today, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Sen. Joe Lieberman introduced a resolution stating that guns do not belong in schools and places of worship.

The senators said that it is now legal in at least 22 states for gun owners to carry concealed weapons in churches, synagogues and mosques.

''We want to make a clear, unequivocal statement that we, like most Americans, believe that Saturday Night Specials do not belong in Sunday School classes or any other place where families are learning, playing or praying,'' said Lieberman, D-Conn.

He said they plan to introduce the non-binding measure, sponsored by 23 Senate Democrats, in advance of the Million Mom March against gun violence on May 14 in Washington.

Gore was also announcing support for legislation backed by Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., that would set aside federal spending for law enforcement, making it harder to raid that money for other purposes.

Gore has already come out in support of a number of gun control measures including mandatory child safety locks, requiring background checks for purchases at gun shows and banning ''junk guns'' and assault weapons.

Thanks “Al Bore” for another area cleared of law-abiding citizens so the predators can move in unfettered.

To Mr. Gore:

That's right, herd the poor souls into their places of worship without means of self-defense so you and your JBT's can come round up the poor sheep. Our RKBA says nothing of borders or boundries.

So let this be a warning to you and your kind...TRUE Americans are standing ready to take their beloved country back from your swine. The question is, are you prepared to become hog chow?

PR

Two-faced forked tongue lying moron.

Let's see now...CCW (CHL) folks must undergo extensive background check, the CCW is generally only for one or 2 guns (state determined), which are then de facto registered. So, these people are exactly what he wants all gun owners to be...licensed and registered. But, obviously he doesn't want them to be able to carry...so, its clear what the hypocrite wants...one more level of submission with no gain for a law abiding gunowner.

------------------
"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes" RKBA!

All he wants is to be able to set up nice neat and clean killing grounds. You know kind of like those around fortifications. Clean up a couple of hundred yards of ground so when the bad guys come they have no cover and or concealment. Same for us. Make as many places safe for criminals as possible. When more $hit happens it will just be more fuel for the fascist bon-fire.

Slowpoke, I’m afraid that I’m going to have to ask you to change your handle. :)

You beat my post by a full hour! You certainly are no “Slowpoke”.

Thanks for the timely and relevant articles.

...the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Sounds like an INFRINGEMENT to me....

I have given up. I no longer try to be 'legal'. I'm sorry, but my desire to stay ALIVE, and to be able to keep my FAMILY alive, outweighs my desire to be a "good citizen". (The only GOOD citizen is a DEAD citizen...?)

Nope. No more. I've had it. Screw 'em all.

"When guns are outlawed, I'll be an outlaw."

Wait, I already AM! Break out the Zyklon-B.

And that includes me and every other law abiding citizen who goes to church, I guess. I'm sure this law would have prevented the Columbine High School tragedy.

The only people the government doesn't have a disarmament plan for are violent criminals.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;...

This is why the Democrats are making it a "non-binding resolution". If they tried to make it an actual law, no court in the country would uphold it. Congress has no business, at all, telling any church what they should or should not be permitting in houses of worship.

Frankly, this is a great opportunity for the Republicans if they were clever enough to take avantage of it (which they rarely are IMHO). The Democrats are attacking freedom of religion here, and thereby the First Amendment -- which is the only Amendment that the press even pretends to care about. I guess there isn't an Amendment in the entire Constitution that is safe anymore. Personally I'd love to see a headline saying "Gore attacks religious freedom", not that it would actually happen.

UPDATE

Gore Urges Ban on Guns in Churches
By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Vice President Al Gore called for a ban on guns in churches and other places of worship Friday, taking a poke at Republican rival George W. Bush's Texas version of the idea.

Gore was expanding his proposals on gun control, a hot election-year issue in the nation's largest state, at the start of a weekend trip that was also serving as an aggressive fund-raising swing.

In all, he planned to raise well over $5 million for his campaign and for the Democratic National Committee.

In a speech here late Friday, Gore was to announce support for legislation banning firearms in churches, synagogues and mosques, as well as where school events are held.

Gore, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, noted that Bush signed a law in 1995 that allows Texans to carry concealed weapons with a permit.

While that law banned guns from churches and synagogues, in 1997 Bush signed another law that said houses of worship would have to post signs or hand out cards alerting visitors if the gun rule was to be enforced.

''I believe we need to seize upon the growing consensus that it is time to get guns away from those who should not have them,'' Gore said in remarks prepared for delivery at the Washington United Youth Center in San Jose.

He said he has always believed in the right of hunters to carry weapons, ''but America cannot afford another Columbine, or another Paducah, or another Jonesboro.''

Shootings at schools in those communities have galvanized support for gun control measures among many Americans.

There have been two church shootings in Texas in recent months. Last month, a man opened fire in a Pasadena church, wounding an 18-year-old woman he was courting, her mother and two others before shooting himself to death. Last September, a man fatally shot seven people in a Fort Worth church before killing himself in a pew.

A spokesman for Bush was not immediately available for comment on Gore's proposal.

Gore had already come out in support of a number of gun control measures including mandatory child safety locks, required background checks for purchases at gun shows and a ban on ''junk guns'' and assault weapons.

Bush has said he would support background checks at gun shows, but only if they were done instantly. He also has said that a federal law requiring child-safety locks would be impractical but he would sign it anyway.

After his youth center appearance, Gore was to raise $100,000 for his campaign in San Jose, and Friday evening he was to help the DNC take in $2.5 million. Saturday night, he and President Clinton plan a fund-raiser for the party that is expected to take in another $2.5 million.

Also Saturday, Tipper Gore was to be host for an event raising $50,000 for the party.

Gore has said repeatedly that campaign-finance laws need to be tightened, but he has also said he will continue to raise money vigorously to compete with Bush in the meantime.

Campaign strategist Kathy Begala said, ''He's out in California to talk about making kids safe, especially in churches, and he's also going to be raising money as he has been all year long.''

Meanwhile, according to a poll released Friday by Time Magazine and the Discovery Channel, one-third of teen-agers and parents say youth violence has increased since the shootings in Littleton, Colo. Four in 10 teen-agers said they had heard a student threaten to kill another student, though only two in 10 parents believed their own teen-agers had witnessed such an event.

Also Friday, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Sen. Joseph Lieberman said they would introduce a nonbinding resolution stating that guns do not belong in schools and places of worship. They said it is now legal in at least 22 states for people to carry concealed weapons in churches, synagogues and mosques.

This should be posted to the ACLU.

Gun regulations are based on safety issues
and not on the supposed sacred nature of the church. There is not safety issue uniques to church that would be similar to those of carrying guns in an airplane.

You are telling worshipper how to worship
based on your view of appropriate religious values.

Nope

I'm sure that a law like this would have stopped Buford T. Idiot Furrow in his tracks, at the Jewish Center door. "Ooooh, thaaaaaat's rightttt... I can't take my gun in there...I'll have to wait 'til they come out to shoot them"

IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore IDIOT gore

Sounds like a simple church versus state issue to me.

If my pastor, of his own church, says that I can carry a gun in church, or perhaps he wants to carry one himself, then who is the State to come and tell him/us that we cannot carry guns on our church grounds?

How DARE them tell me what I can take to church.

As it is now, it should be left up to the church, not the State. If my church leaders say I can bring a gun, then I can bring a gun.

Ps- Not only that, but need we mention that this law won't do squat in stopping a criminal from bringing a gun onto church grounds. Just like the law didn't make Dillon and Eric turn around when they realized that it was illegal to bring a gun on school grounds. What kind of drugs are these anti-gun people smoking?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of any church shootings that occurred between members of a congregation that just erupted suddenly?
Every one I can think of involved some wacko who just walked in off the street and had more or less planned to do something nasty in advance.
I can understand a spontaneous shootout in a bar. Everybody's a little drunk, someone makes a less than witty comment and ... bang!
But what would set someone off at church?
Making a withdrawal from the collection basket during offertory?
Being the last one in line for communion ... again?
Hating the closing hymn?
Seriously, has anyone ever heard of an incident where two or more legally armed members of a congregation started shooting at each other?

I'll tell you what the results of this bonehead law would have been. 15 years ago, a former member of my church with escalating mental problems shot and killed one of our pastor and deacon during a Sunday service. Gore wants me to believe that this man, who had no problem with breaking the law that says it's illegal to commit murder, would all of a sudden have a problem with carrying a gun into a church because it's against the law. WHAT A #$@$*) IDIOT.

This murderer specifically targeted the 2 victims and was about to continue his rampage if not for the fact a member who happened to be carrying his licensed handgun ended this killing spree. If Vice-Idiot Gore had his way, this member would not have had his gun and who knows how many more people would have died that day. Gore's idea and anyone who supports it is giving these victims and their family a slap in the face. I can't even begin to tell you how much disgusted and furious I am.

Our Lord warned his gang, before his being taken into custody, to arm themselves. It is fatalism to deny the possession of arms in any venue, including the temple.

This is simply another attempt at infringement. I want to give Gore a piece of my mind but I could not find any "Contact Us" button on his official site. If anyone can give me an e-mail address where I can contact him I would appreciate it as well as that of any other supporter of this nonsense.

I heard of a church in Florida where a man (or men) came into a service intent on robbing the offering and who knows what was planned. The robbery was thwarted because several of the people in the church were armed.

The real reason that the elite left does not want us to carry arms in our churches is the same that it has always been. CONTROL CONTROL CONTROL. That is the name of the game. They don't want us to be able to resist when their henchmen come into our services and try to force us to reject Christ. That is what the communists have done in many other countries and that is what they want to do here. Where is communism blasted more than in churches from behind the pulpit? With all this hate and thought crime nonsense they could easily start arresting preachers and church members right and left.

Such a ruling would be a violation of the 1st Amendment freedom of religion. My religious convictions include being prepared to defend innocent life, and as long as my arms are responsibly concealed, do not unduly disturb the peace, and do not harm innocents, the gov't has no right to insist I be disarmed during worship. Christ directed his disciples to buy swords, and Christ himself took arms into The Temple - and used them.

May I suggest that those of you with first-hand knowledge of CCW holders stopping a shooting in progress in a church write a letter to the editor? Constitutionality aside, this kind of emotionally based initiative could gain traction. The best way to stop it is to show how much harm it can do.

Dick
