aonther odd critter

For a year or so I thought it was a coati but it has no markings at all and the tail isn't bushy. I thought the martin head and face looked similar but again the tail wasn't as thick or bushy. There is a resemblance to the Jaguarundi, but you're probably right about them not living east of the Mississippi.

sounds like maybe a Fisher or small Wolverine. They are reintroducing them here in Wisconsin along with their smaller cousin the Pine Martens to prey on the exploding porcupine population. I've been seeing them more and more in the big tracts of public land north of us and their gait when crossing the road sounds much like your description.....

Meek,

Not to sidetrack us or the flow of ideas but over the last few months I noticed several threads on hunting forums discussing how mange infections can totally remodel the look of an animal you or I would normally recognize in a second if it were healthy.

Some of threads had photos that were pretty amazing. I'm not saying your mystery creature is a mange victim but it's something to keep in mind if you get another up-close view.

Consider what the possible target critter would look like with no hair and bad skin and you might come up with some new possibilities. Interesting thread.

I don't know about the mange theory. I shot a raccoon once that had bad mange and it was really unhealthy looking. This thing loped in a very fluid motion and what I could see of it was that it had a very uniform coat of short hair. At first I'd been convinced of it being a coatimundi or something like that until I saw it this last time. So far the best match has been jaguarundi for body and tail type, head size, ear size and movement pattern. All the various otters, wolverines et cetera all have tails that are too fat, all the other cats are either too big or too little or too spotted. And most of the Chupacabras I've seen went to Yale law school.

If it looked like this thing, I'd be loading up with buckshot (AP photo):

Man this is freakin me out - I seriously want to know what that thing is meek - you don't think it's in that marten/fisher family?

SDC, what is that thing?

THAT was a really creepy creature, that south Texas thing, but the one we saw looked nothing like it, not at all as wormy looking. Ms. Meek and I have been carrying the camera on our drives past the place we saw it so sooner or later we'll get a photo. Just a matter of time.

No, FF, its tail looks more like a mountain lions tail instead of a martin/fisher tail. Like I say, sooner or later we'll get a photo. :o
