Anyone know of accidental deaths at ranges?

NAD - I know what you mean about sweeping...yesterday this guy was about 15 feet away, he loads a mag, racks the slide (keep in mind he is at the ready table facing away from the targets) and, with his finger on the trigger, points the gun directly at me (and everyone else) as he turns towards the targets.

Then he has the gall to get pissed at me when I point it out to him.

An Orange County, CA Sherrif's range officer (not sworn LEO) was checking out a confiscated M-10 or M-11 to see if it had been illegally converted or so the story goes. He ended up shooting himself in the head.

Military ranges get a few suicides every year. The range is one of the few places they get weapons and ammo at the same time. We had one in Okinawa in 1994/1995 (as well as several suicides not involving guns) and read about a couple stateside, during the same period. One was a Marine DI, having been served divorce papers earlier in the day, who killed himself with a M16 in front of his platoon. Not a pretty introduction to the Corps.

Okay - from what I understand, Bullseye in St. Louis has had to do a cleanup job after a customer at least once... Possibly more... And one idjit brought a loaded mousegun to a gun show downtown, and when it was checked at the door, someone pulled the trigger to see if it was loaded, and someone caught the ricochet in their leg - no more gun shows in downtown St. Louis...

I've never heard of an accidental shooting of any kind at any of the ranges in the area...

I also read about an incident at the Las Vegas Class 3 range, where some guy was unholstering his Sig and shot himself in the leg. In the end the was ok, the bullet travelled through his upper thigh to the medial aspect of his leg and no artery or nerve was damaged. Very lucky man.

I think you may be thinking of an incident that occurred at Front Sight when they were still in Bakersfield, CA. You can read about it on their website. I was right beside him on the firing line when it happened. As the guns were coming out, I saw a puff of dust and muzzle blast at his feet, in my peripheral vision. He yelped and stumbled backward. The instructors got to him before he could fall.

We had a pubic range suicide here in the Cleveland Ohio area a couple of months ago. Woman came in and rented a Beretta 9mm. Goes into stall then announces that the was going to kill herself. Police arrive, family arrives. Talks go on for hours. Woman finally goes through with it.

How can you protect yourself from a customer like this? The range owners were devestated for weeks. I'm glad they put it behind them as unpreventable and have gone on with business.
