Suspect in Chicago rapes falls
By Rey Arquiza
An American wanted in Chicago, Illinois for a string of rape attacks against mostly Asian women was arrested yesterday at a Parañaque City shopping mall by agents of the Bureau of Immigration.
Mark Anthony Lewis, 33, of Chicago, denied involvement in the attacks against eight Asian women and one Hispanic woman in the Chicago area. Among his alleged victims is a Filipino woman.
"I surrendered because I didn't want anyone to get hurt and I wanted to prove my innocence," he said, claiming that his wallet was stolen two years ago and used by the attacker. "If I was guilty, I should have kept hiding."
Lewis said he had family and friends in the Philippines and his visit had been planned earlier. Lewis, who said he has a Filipina wife, arrived in Manila for a vacation on a tourist visa on July 21, two days after the latest attack.
"I did not flee the US," The former US Army soldier said. "As for these charges of me assaulting anyone, they are totally uncorroborated by anything."
Immigration Commissioner Rufus Rodriguez presented Lewis to reporters at the bureau's office in Manila after he was picked up by three intelligence agents at the Coastal Mall along Roxas Boulevard. He was later turned over to US authorities.
"We have every belief and confidence that this is the individual we have sought," said Dennis Pierce, a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent.
Lewis, who did not resist arrest, was apprehended after an informant tipped off the immigration bureau on his whereabouts, Rodriguez said, adding that the informant will receive a $15,000 reward. An immigration agent, who requested anonymity, said the informant was Lewis' wife herself.
Rodriguez ordered Lewis's name included in the bureau's blacklist to prevent him from re-entering the country.
Lewis's passport has been canceled by the US Embassy, making him an "undocumented alien" in the Philippines subject to deportation, he said.
The Philippines and the US have an extradition treaty.
Lewis is to be escorted back to the US last night by Pierce and the three immigration agents who arrested him.
"The FBI is proud to work closely with the Philippine Bureau of Immigration on this case from the moment we first became aware of it and we worked non-stop together to arrest this individual who preyed on Asian women," Pierce said.
The Chicago police have put out an arrest warrant for Lewis issued by the circuit court in Cook County in Illinois. The FBI also obtained a federal arrest warrant.
The US Embassy sought the help of local authorities after learning that Lewis was in the country.
Lewis allegedly disguised himself as either a census taker, an immigration officer, a policeman or an FBI agent to get into the women's homes before assaulting and robbing them, Chicago police said.
Lewis' victims, the Chicago police said, identified him through photographs and his car, which matched the description of the car used by a man in one of the attacks, that began on April 7.
Clothing and other items described by the victims were found at Lewis' last known address in Chicago, Chicago police said.
Under Illinois law, each offense carries a maximum penalty of 30 years imprisonment. Lewis eluded two police raids on his known addresses in Manila this week. -- With reports from Ding Cervantes, AP, AFP
