Anyone hear of this?.....

I thought SAIGA shotgun from Russia is already what you described, (semi-auto, magazine fed, AK gas system, etc...)

Answered this, but it got lost. The Saiga(Named for the antelope found on the Steppes) has a 5 round box mag about as long as a 20 rd AK mag. And,box mags work best with rimless cartridges.

Dave,
In regard to the idea of a detachable magazine tube on a shotgun, there was one conversion kit in the early to mid 1990's for the Mossberg model 500 shotgun. I believe that it was made for the 500 with the extended magazine (I think it was 7 in the tube, and not usable on the 590).
The mag tube would be pulled out for a reload when the fore end was racked back. But I don't know what kept it from detaching when cycling the action. The kit had two magazine tubes and probably some sort of part to allow them to lock and unlock from the receiver. It also had a fairly steep price in the 200-250 range. I would look for the Shotgun News ad it was in, but nearly all of my older ones were thrown when I moved. It was a nice idea, but detachable mag tubes are like those USA readi-loaders in having the deficiency of being an awkward size for carrying and manipulating.

Not terribly handy in a duck blind but kinda neat for the looks it would get you on the skeet range.

Hey what the hell are you.. BOOM KABOOMKABOOM.

Think If I took one of those up for a round of sporting clays that anyone would let me play?

I can see it now...

"What's that?"

"Its a Perazzi.. its Italian and its hand fitted and hand checkered and ported and slick as a venice hooker's backside after church. I brought it here in a hand fitted leather and canvas case"

Looking sideways.. "what on earth IS That... that thing?"

"It's a Saiga. Its Russian. Illiterate farmhands made it from spare tractor parts, its as smooth as the stubble on a bulgarian whore's armpits after the fleet pulled out, I towed it here behind my truck, oh and I can slip slugs in it too."

Sneer turns to leer.... "dude thats so cool"
