Anyone else here collect S&W revolvers?

Fusby,

No no no, I'm talking about the ORIGINAL M-frame S&Ws, which were also the ORIGINAL LadySmith revolvers.

Produced from 1902 to about 1917 or so, they were even smaller than the I frame .32s, and were chambered only in .22.

VERY sought after by collectors today.

I did own them but I have decided to put my money where my mouth is where the Second ammendment is concerned and I hae since divested myself of that company's products.

I am a firm believer in voting the only way a consumer can, with your dollars (or lack thereof).

Boycott Smith and Wesson!

Kframe19,

2 686's, 2.5" & 6"
1 625, 5" .45 acp
Last but not least, a Model 547 9mm 3" bbl round butt.
Speaking of that, Kframe, do you know how many Model 547 9mm revolvers were manufactured? I found this one unfired NIB, and haven't shot it yet. I'd like to find out how many were made before I do.
Thanks,
johnnyb

I don't collect them, but I have a bunch I like to shoot! K-frame, do you have the book or can you ask Smithnut when my model 27 serial number N114xxx was made? I can't get to Shooters or GunSpot right now and I don't want to wait.

Yep, been collecting far longer than I've been on this board, which has been about a year now.
I think I started collecting 5 years ago and am working on a modest assortment.
Favorites are, quite obviously the K-frame, and specifically the M&P/M10's.
Stop on over to gunspot.com and shooterstalk.com sometime, lots of revolver fans hang out there.
We've been swapping stories over there for a few years now.

Every shooter with good taste collects Smith & Wesson revolvers.
The oldest S&W revolver I have is a Model Number 2 "Army", a six shot tip-up .32 rimfire. It was produced in early 1861 and shoots quite well when I can get my hands on some decent .32 long rimfire cartridges.

I HAVE A 8 3/8" MODEL 57 NICKEL FINISH, 3LB TRIGGER W/ ZEBRAWOOD GRIPS. SHOOTS LIKE A DREAM. ALSO MODELS 36, 629, SW99, AND A MASTERPIECE. I WILL HOWEVER NO LONGER BUY A S/W FIREARM DUE TO ROSIE O'DONNELLS ENDORSEMENT ON TV 2 WEEKS AGO.

JohnnyBravo,

I think only between 7,000 to 10,000 547s were produced by S&W, and perhaps half of those were the 3" roundbutts.

I'm in Northern Virginia, and you only very rarely see 547s at the gunshows.

I'd like to get one, but haven't found one in decent shape for a decent price yet.

No M frames, at least not yet. I agree with you, quite expensive (I would say overpriced) and seldom for sale.

In all my years of collecting, I don't think I've ever actually seen an M frame, except in pictures, of course. Delicate little guns. I would think the survival rate is quite low.

Mike,

Can't say I am a collector, however, my first handgun was the 686 that you and other members of the Compu$erve Firearms Forum (R.I.P.) talked me into almost exactly two years ago.

Since then I've picked up a PC 627 V-Comp in a raffle at the 1999 International Revolver Championships (I was a spectator then, am an entrant this year) for $20 worth of raffle tickets.

A couple of current model S&Ws are on my wish list: 617, 686 six shot with 4" barrel, a couple of PC guns including that outrageous thing with the sling for silhouette.

Would also love to have a Schoefield (spelling?) if it were anywhere in my price range.

Love em... got 8 myself and will be looking for more at the Birmingham AL show late in May... Hope to find a 60's vintage Mod 19 and always looking for a good Mod 16.

Good Shooting

Brian

Guy, I always wondered what happened to you on the Firearms Forum.

It certainly wasn't me who prompted you to pick up a *686*. I HATE full-lugged barrels! :)

kframe,
No kidding....there is an M frame......never heard of it, educate me a little here....and were do i find a picture......Ive owned my share j,k,n and a couple of l's but i dont think Ive heard of an M.....as of today I put on layaway two more a unfired in the original box and papers, 1955 mdl in 45acp, and a used 686 rb, orig finger grips s/w wood stocks, w 2" barrel(like you Im not fond of the full underlugged barrel. In two weeks Ill be pulling out a 4" pinned/recessed 19, and an old s/w mp with 2" barrel----fubsy.

Mike,

I know you're more of a traditionalist, but my choices at the time were a Taurus 608 and S&W 686+ (7-shot). I thought it would be my only gun and wanted something both trick and practical for all around use.

Funny... I keep ribbing auto shooters for their gimicky guns, and here I don't even own a proper 6-shot revolver. Would like to have one some day and the irony of it is that the 6-shot would be purchased specifically for IDPA competition. A "specialized" gun in a manner of speaking for this shooter who smirks at the idea of specialized gear for competition.

Over the last 47 years I don't think I have been without at least one. I never collected em, they just wandered in and got put to use. Lots of K-22s and K-38s. First J about 66 for deep conceal carry. Currently only three; 36-0 3", 19-3 6" all Ts including overtravel stop ( tack driver )and 686-1 2.5" for carry.
I will not buy another new S&W but have no qualms about adopting used ones. I also do not like full lug but the full lug 2.5" 686 I can live with ( or eject with a stick )
