Anyone Else "Done" With the 1911 Platform

Nope, my favorite handgun is the 1911. The trigger is perfection and my Baer PII is the most accurate handgun I own, even without the 1.5" guarantee. The latter includes Glocks, Sigs and HK's.

Yeah, I am done with 1911 pistols right till another Colt Series 70 1911 comes along. Looking for a 9mm Series 70 Colt at present. :)

Truth is I will never be "Done" with any gun design or model that I like and the 1911 guns fit that category.

Insofar as the OP's original post:

Anyone else done with the 1911 platform...with all the options of plastic autos available.

Answer: Never.

I shot my BIL's Glock .40 10 years ago. I was not impressed. Too blocky and I did not care for the trigger in the least.

Being old and gray, I have only 3 handguns:

A Ruger SP101 3" .357 and two 1911's.

The fun-gun 1911 is a home-built pistol based upon an Olympic Arms Matchmaster stripped frame, SARCO/Numrich/Wolff parts and a 1992 J.A. Ciener .22 Conversion top end. All of the parts fitting was done by me.

My SD/HD/CC pistol (you will probably laugh unless you are staring at the muzzle) is a completely reworked AMT Covina Hardballer .45 ACP (that I bought in 1992 for $150 with 2 factory stainless mags) that I did myself, all blued steel pins, thumb safety, firing pin, extractor, firing pin stop and a throated barrel.

Thank you Jerry Kuhnhausen!

Just my $.02 worth.

GI type 45acp - love it

Colt Government Model 380 - love it

RIA 40 caliber double stack - love it

"1911 inspired" Star 9mm - love it

I will love the next one too. It's a great platform. They are amazing for range "work" or plinking. I am old and prefer 12 gauge or revolver for SD, but I would feel at least adequately armed with one of my 1911's. The RIA holds something like 16 rounds of 40 caliber and has great sights & trigger - I doubt you could be "obviously better armed" with a handgun for HD.

1911

Not done, just getting started.
When I started witn handguns I liked revolvers, 2nd gun I owned was a 44mag super redhawk. After that I got into poly guns. I liked the USP, FNP etc... still do. I just liked that they were lighter and had greater capacity. I actually hated the 1911 platform. It seemed outdated and usless compared to new models. Maybe its age but at some point ploy guns lost some appeal and the metal guns became more interesting. I love the weight, feel and machining of a steel handgun. Form over function I guess. I have a 45 xds that is perfect for its intended use but when I hold the Detonics combat master it just feels so damn good. I never tought I would own a 1911 but now I try to rationalize spending the$ for a wilson combat .45. Also im a hardchrome whore, I almost chromed my fal but I feel someone would punch me for that lol

Done?!

Nah, it's asking too much to give up that old-school form and the hard-hitting .45acp for the new ghey polymer crap in mini-me calibers.

No way in hell. I love the 1911. I do appreciate double stack poly pistols as well..like the XD...and Glock for the most part. The 1911 for carry is perfect..I guess you should be a full size guy to carry a full size pistol but me at 200 lbs athletic build and 5' 11'', I can carry one very easily. Single stack is slim and nothing beats the .45 acp Federal HST for defense and the .45 is the only caliber that I would feel comfortable carrying FMJ for defense if I had to.

I just picked up this custom built beauty from Derr Precision last weekends.

So I guess I firmly fall into the "not even close" category!

I was done with the 1911 decades ago.

I was done with the 1911 the first time I picked up and shot a 4506-1. Never looked back and havent missed a thing. Regards 18DAI

I have been shooting for 50 years. I was done with them and followed all the others all over the map. I still like a few of the others but have come full circle and rediscovered the 1911. It is a great platform with a lot of virtues. Mechanical simplicity is very high on my list of attribute's and it is tough to beat a 1911 on that one. I don't carry one often because of the size but If I knew I was headed for trouble it would be the one I grabbed.

He's not done with them. He only started this and other similar threads to amuse himself to see who he could bait into response. A reliable 1911 is an excellent choice for a carry gun.

Hmmm, funny every time I go to the range a 1911 goes with me. Am now considering an alloy frame commander for CC.
Plastic? Yeah I have some.
I doubt I'll ever sell my 1911s. In fact, I"ll probably leave them to my nephew.
I've been looking at other 45acp options, for CC, no luck yet.

I like the metal guns that are essentially 1911 mechanisms on different frames, but I dislike that I'm so drawn to the better built HKs and SIGs and only barely to the 1911 style Remingtons or Colts anymore.

Even BHPs and CZs are skeptical cases of "would I buy this?" for me.

Some may be done with the 1911, but the majority of the pistol shooting culture will not be. And since its inception in 1909, it will still be still be around and in the holsters of sportman, hunters, military specialists, and competition shooters many many moons after you are part of earth again. Brownings design will live on as long as there is the material, skill, and labor to build it. So long as we have iron and oil and lead, and humans able to work machines, the 1911 will live on. It has made it this far for a reason. When made correctly and with parts of good integrity, it will last nearly forever
