I just went through this thought process in planning for a +5000 mile trip from N. Alabama to Gallup, NM with a week side trip to central Nevada from July 14 - 31, 2000. Here's a synopsis of my loadout:
- G23 in .40
- Sig P226 in 9mm
- BM/CLE Coyote Rifle
- Ruger 10/22 (for jackrabbits)
- +500 rds of .223, +700 rds of .22 LR and 2-3 mags each for the handguns
- Tool chest
- 5 gal gas
- at least 2 gallons clean water + 2 gallons "cooler" water
- Hi lift jack
- Come-along
- First Aid kit
- Cell phone, CB radio + 2 way radios
As it turns out, we had an emergency that directly used my desert experience:
We drove from Gallup, NM to Las Vegas, NV, stopped at several places getting food, water, gas, etc. in LV in 106-108 degrees F. We then drove 100 miles north to Alamo, NV, drove 22 miles off the paved road to Badger Springs campground at the base of Tickaboo Peak, stopped the truck and then tried to restart it. Total battery failure, 22 miles from the paved road, absolutely empty desert, no cell phone coverage and its +105 degrees in the shade.
What did we do? We went to bed! The next morning I checked the battery and truck as well as possible with no results. I even opened up the vents in the "no-maintenance" battery, added water, but it didn't help.
I waited the day out and, around 6 PM started walking the 22 miles out. At about 8 miles, I noticed some antenna's on top of a local mountain and tried the cell phone again. I got through to the Lincoln Co., NV sheriff's office, who sent a deputy. He jumped my truck, we left the camping gear in place and got the heck out of Dodge. After spending the night in one of the two motels in Alamo and getting a new battery the next morning, we went back in, my son and I climbed Tickaboo Peak and took some pictures of Groom Lake Air Force Base (aka Area 51).
So what was the big deal:
I had my 6 year old son and my 74 year old dad with me. There was three generations of my family right there.
Bottom line, Plan, plan and plan and then assume the worse, because in my case, it almost happened.
Regards,
Albin
