Anyone carry/bring more than one gun when going on a trip?

Going on a cross-state trip with the family in a few weeks with a driving distance of 5-6 hours and the nearest exit in sections of the trip might be 50 miles away. If we're in the middle of one of these parts and encounter problems, the quickest assistance could be half an hour away or more.

Since this is going to be a mini-vacation, deep concealment was going to be the order of the day with my Kahr MK9 in an inside the waist belly band. While I feel well armed with the MK9 in public where help is not too far away, I feel less than comfortable having to depend on it when I'm in the middle of no where.

I'm thinking about bringing either a full-size S&W659 which I can throw under the seat or a mid-size S&W 3913 which I can carry in a fanny pack -- both are 9mm to keep the ammo compatable with the MK9. I have a CWL so there are no legal aspects to consider with either option.

Do others think that this is a good idea or an I just being overly paranoid and I should just stick with the one gun?

By the way, how much extra ammo should I bring? I normally carry one spare magazine full.

When I go hiking / camping, I always bring a Ruger Security Six (.357 Mag) in open carry. I think it would be more effective on big critters (bear, mountain lion, criminals ...) than a 9mm. And, if we're out in the middle of nowhere, and run into a problem, another member of my party may be able to assist, if I provide a firearm.

Good thread ... I'll appreciate seeing other advice on this subject. Thanks.

In my case I would carry all three. One for me, one for my wife and a backup in case something happens to one of the primaries. Or I could bring a 12GA for the 3rd gun.

2 camping trips ago, I brought along our Mossberg 500, USPc .45, and my wife had her P228. I still had my P11 in my butt bag. A bit overkill, I would say :)

The camping this past weekend in the Sawtooth Mtns of Idaho, I open carried my USPc, and we had the P11 and P228, too. No shotgun. Any time I go 4 wheeling or camping, I'm bringing extras.

I'm with Steve. Fire arm per person plus a stashed one. Long gun if feasable.

Plus cell phone and at least a gallon of water per person.

Sam...follow me, I know a shortcut.

Actually, I didn't have a camping trip in mind. We are going to go from one populated area of the state to another populated area of the state but in order to get there we have about 5-6 hours of driving to do across the wilderness where there is NOTHING around for miles & miles and the nearest exit will be 50 miles away. But I appreciate the input.

FUD, cars break down, take that cell phone and water. Walking 5-6 miles in the heat is bad news. As far as guns go, I recommend: 1 pistol for FUD, 1 pistol for Mrs. FUD, and a shotgun in the trunk. Plus plenty of ammo for all.

chadintex, my wife shoots but doesn't have a CWL so I can carry her gun along but what about for my two sister-in-laws -- one who is semi-anti while the other is a SUPER-anti? Should I mention to them that I'm bringing a gun along for each of them as well?

travelling through some wide open places, you might just luck into a good spot to stop and do a little shooting. Might give you an opportunity to straighten out a few of those in-laws (if you do, I'm sending you mine to work on). As long as you are legal, take 'em all, they don't take up that much space.

It's a family vacation, take the whole family :)

btw When I travel around Texas I take at least a rifle and pistol, and definately a shotgun if it's dove season. I've been rewarded with a couple of impromptu afternoons of shooting ;)

Keep one pistol on you and the other under your seat in that locked box of yours. Keep the shotgun in the trunk unless it's needed. As far as the Sisters in Law, they won't know about them unless you need them and I doubt that they would care then. If they do complain, make 'em walk.

I can easily picture a situation--automotice breakdown or some other, where you and family could be separated temporarily. You need a firearm, they need one. I'd say take along at least two. A spare might be nice, as well. Of course, this is predicated on your wife or S.O.P. being competent in use of a firearm. There should always be some understanding about tactics and equipment. As in, if the anti-gun family is with yu when the car breaks down, it would be nice if wife/etc already knows where the spare sidearm and extra ammo is stored. Also--She does NOT leave the vehicle, even for a 20 yard "nature tour" without the sidearm.

If any of the extended family includes children, take appropriate precautions.

Have a nice trip, in spite of the concerns of your paranoid friends.

Usually, 2 or 3: (At least) 1 "carry" handgun (S&W model 60 or 36 snubbie, Colt Commander) and 1 pocket handgun (.25 Raven :o , NAA .22 WMR mini, Davis .38 Spec derringer). (Optional) 1 shootin' iron for fun (Tokarev, S&W 629, Ruger P-89).

S&W Model 66 on the rare occasions when I go camping.

IMO, you are not paranoid, FUD.

I often carry 2 handguns. Your situation screams for revolvers due to simplicity for nongunners to use in an emergency.

Extras are nice, preferably of the same action type. The hideout piece is always with you and the heavier piece is fairly close by for either yourself or another competent person. If people (have to) go their separate ways for any reason they have a 'friend' to accompany them.

I live in a land of long distances and in this family the basics include a cell phone and a good firearm--plus whatever else is indicated.

It was for that reason that I originally thought about bringing just two guns: [1] as my inside the waist belly band CCW (the MK9) and [2] a slightly larger gun to keep in a fanny pack (either my S&W659 or my S&W3913) -- in this way, both guns would be under my control at all times.

I'd let the 2 antis ride the big grey dog. They might throw your aim off and the experience might do them good. :D

I have a motor home and do a lot of traveling cross country as well as short (300 miles in Texas is short) trips. If hassled by anything less than the full LAPD I'm generally on a equal footing. Paranoid? No, just a former boy scout who still remembers the motto.

RKBA!

Just got back from a trip from AZ to Utah. Did not think bears would be a problem so the wife (an anti) and I went lightly armed with my pair of Glock 40's and a Mini-14 factory folder. Jeep was a little tail heavy from all the ammo though :) Nice that I could do it legally as Utah honors AZ CCW. Had bears been a definite consideration the 6" SW 629 with Garrettes would go with one Glock and a HK91. Did see a large Elk with velvet rack in a deep forest between Cedar Falls and Zion Park. We watched him for several minutes before wifey got nervous and ran back to the jeep. If there are more than 8 trees she would prefer to stay in the jeep.I learned never to say certain words in the woods, like mountain lion, bears, snake, large bird, or she is off and running.Being a psychotherapist and knowing her childhood history I understand where her fear of guns, woods and animals comes from.

For everyone suggesting that a long gun ride in back.. whats up if FUD has to leave his vehicle? Does the long gun tag along then, or stay behind with the vehicle?
